Book Description:
The glaciers of the Sierra Nevada are melting, destroying the habitat of the mastodons, creating the rich land that will become California. The coastal people struggle to understand the changing world around them: their seer Sunchaser has lost his way to the Spirit World, and mammoths continue to disappear.

When a beautiful woman arrives, fleeing from her abusive husband, the people know what they must do--for if the Spirits are already taking the animals away, what will happen if they shelter a stranger?

Now Sunchaser must make a choice--between the woman he loves and the preservation of his people's world.

One of the best in the series. An entertaining way to become familar with our native ansestors of North America. Very educational and enlightenig as they delt with climate change and animal extention of extreme proportions. I recommend the entire series.

It has been a long a time since I read this book. I am some what of a history buff and very interested in what life might have been like for humans during the ice age. The story is a good "day in the life" of pre-historic human tale. A very "it could have happened" story. I enjoy it but have read other stories on the same subject I've liked better.

This is a paleolithic novel. I would not recommend it for someone who has been abused because there is a sadistic man chasing his wife. But she does prevail and end up being with a "dreamer." It takes place on the West Coast.

Fifth of the great anthropologically based series beginning with the settlement of the epi- glacial North American Continent and visiting tribal peoples over the next few thousand years. I loved them all.

This book follows a young heroin. There is social conflict, tribal superstitution, and lots of adventure. Well worth the read.
