Book Description:
Panoramic in scope, Away is the epic and intimate story of young Lillian Leyb, a dangerous innocent, an accidental heroine. When her family is destroyed in a Russian pogrom, Lillian comes to America alone, determined to make her way in a new land. When word comes that her daughter, Sophie, might still be alive, Lillian embarks on an odyssey that takes her from the world of the Yiddish theater on New York’s Lower East Side, to Seattle’s Jazz District, and up to Alaska, along the fabled Telegraph Trail toward Siberia. All of the qualities readers love in Amy Bloom’s work–her humor and wit, her elegant and irreverent language, her unflinching understanding of passion and the human heart–come together in the embrace of this brilliant novel, which is at once heartbreaking, romantic, and completely unforgettable.

I found this to be a very moving story of a young Russian Jewish immigrant. She ends up traveling to the ends of the earth following her heart.

The descriptions were wonderful and rich - I felt like I could see what Lillian saw and (almost) feel what she felt.

A great story about the strength of the human spirit and the power of love.

Found this frank and honest. A little different take on things than you would imagine.
Liked it very much.

This book was surprising. The story reads very fast and is engrossing but it includes many degrading sexual situations for the main character, a young Jewish immigrant woman. I would not recommend it to anyone who would find explicit and taboo sexual situations upsetting.

This is a stunning book, written with passionate, tight efficiency. Bloom, a short story writer, offers the story of Lillian Leyb's trip from Russia to America, in this, her first novel. The book has a host of unforgettable characters. I read this book over a cold, snowy February Saturday...what a treat to read such a book, especially in one sitting.

I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were real and complex. Amy Bloom is an excellent writer. I loved the way she made sure that we knew how the lives of the major characters turned out even after they no linger had contact with the main character. I could not put this one down. Loved it!
