Thayer thought he was about to attend his cousin William's wedding & soon discovers he is the bridegroom of the beautiful Gytha due to a twist of fate. Thayer is appalled at this news. Years earlier his heart was severely broken by a beautiful but heartless well-bred woman and he promised himself he would never become that vulnerable again. Gytha slowly breaks through the barriers he's constructed around his heart with her innocence and loving ways. But deep down Thayer still isn't convinced she is as pure as she seems and dreads the day when he will find her in bed with another man. Because of Thayer's mistrust, a greedy uncle & Thayer's ex-love Elizabeth (who decides she wants him back in her bed) he and Gytha have a very rocky road ahead of them.

I enjoyed this book, even though I didn't like it as well as her Highland series. It was somewhat amusing to watch Thayer and Gytha stumble around their love, but mostly I just wanted to thump them.

Thayer thought he was about to attend his cousin William's wedding & soon discovers he is the bridegroom of the beautiful Gytha (ugh, what a name) due to a twist of fate. Gytha slowly breaks through the barriers he's constructed around his heart with her innocence and loving ways. I really enjoyed this delightful Beauty & The Beast retelling! It was refreshing to read about a heroine who had no care for looks and although she was physically perfect she didn't feel it was an important part of who she was. This book was very funny in parts, while still being emotionally intense and the chemistry between the h/h was smoldering. This one teared me up & had me smiling at the same time. I hated to see their story come to an end. Track this book down & move it to top of the TBR [to be read] pile.

Although I think all of Hannah Howell's books are good, this was not her best. Gytha notices Thayer's heart and soul long before she ever thinks about his looks. He just has to accept that she loves him unconditionally.

One of Howell's slower books.

Not one of her Scotish titles of the Murray Family. But, great story! The hero isn't a perfect male specimen and the beautiful woman loves him anyway. It was easy reading, but the chemistry between the characters was great and seeing them overecome their insecurities and get past the danger they face was fun.

From the back cover:
On the eve of her wedding to the heir of Saiturn Manor, the stunningly beautiful Gytha is shocked to learn that her betrothed, a man she barely knew, is dead. Now she must marry the new heir, Thayer Saiturn, a battle-hardened knight known as the Red Devil...
With a face scarred in battle and a heart broken in love, Thayer has no interest in marriage. But not even the Red Devil can break the promise his foster-father made years ago and soon finds himself married to a woman whose exquisite beauty and sweet innocence intrigue him. But can his new bride look beyond his scars to find a hidden passion and undying love locked deep inside him?

Not bad.
This is my second Hannah Howell book and this was much better than the first (Only For You). However it was also remarkably similar to that book. The story had much the same basic premise, with a woman marrying a man she doesn't really know, there's a bad guy who wants to kill the hero, she eventually gets pregnant, winds up caught by villain, hero saves the day, yada yada yada.

What I liked about this book is that the hero is a big, unremarkable-looking, red-haired man with freckles. The emotional angst in the story is that he believes he is ugly and doesn't deserve someone beautiful, doesn't trust that someone beautiful can really love him. It is an unusual storyline, that of a man who is insecure about his appearance. The heroine, someone very beautiful who has spent a lifetime of people fawning over her looks and is unmoved by appearance. She finds certain features beautiful and she finds their spirit beautiful. They are well matched.
