One of the greatest gifts we can give to a child is the gift of music. As a tiny baby, he is soothed and comforted by the lullaby, and as he grows, he is charmed by the rhythm, rhyme and melody of the nursery rhyme song.
As our research began in both of these areas, a delightful world was opened to us. Lullabies have probably been sung since the beginning of time, yet collections of them are not easily found. We have included many lullabies that have survived for generations, and we wish to pass them on to future generations.
As early as the 1500s children's rhymes were documented. Through the centuries, many were set to music and eventually put into print. As most of our early Amaerican ancestors were from Europe, so too the rhymes and music have their roots.
These historic rhymes and nursery songs seemed to have been used not only as enjoyment for children, but to expres in a creative way, feelings about the environment, politics, life styles, famous people, sorros, joys and everyday occurrences of the time. Mostly, the original meanings of the rhymes are forgotten, but the enjoyment of the enchanting words with rhytym and melody remains.
