Book Description:
Lavan Chitward is a very unhappy young man; pulled away from his country home by his parents' ambitions and resettled in the big city of Haven, he is desperately lonely, bullied and beaten at school, ignored by his parents. It is not surprising that he falls ill but his illness is the first manifestation of a terrible power, the Gift of the Firestorm, a power which can and does kill. If controlled, the Gift of the Firestorm can save Valdemar, but if it is uncontrolled, it will destroy the country and him. Chosen by the Companion Kalira, brought into the ranks of the Heralds of Valdemar, Lavan finds acceptance and hope for the first time. But war with Karse threatens to engulf the Kingdom and only Lavan Firestorm stands between Valdemar and destruction and only then if he can harness his dreadful power to his will.

This book was the first that I read by Lackey, and I was hooked! The Valdemar world that she has created is very detailed an will draw you in. Since then I have been reading anything by Lackey I can get my hands on and I have yet to be disappointed.

My favorite Valdemar tale. A young boy with the gift to start fires with his mind goes from a bullied student to the hope of the kingdom.

Most of the Valdemar series is written in trilogies, but this one is an exception. Also, it is placed in between the Last Herald Mage books and the Arrows of the Queen books - so there aren't any familiar characters. Lavan Firestorm becomes a legend, and experiences many firsts within the Valdemar world. He goes through many hardships, but manages to come out a hero in the end.

I loved this book very much, but it is definetly aimed towards women - as are most of Mercedes Lackey's books. It is a very worthwhile read.

Not nearly as good as the other Valdemar books.

Another classic Valdemar novel. Since it's only 1 book, the characters aren't as deep as usual but I still cried at the end.

Another great story by Lackey. This is the legendary tale of Lavan Firestorm - he is remembered in legends in the later Valdemar books. This is a great, heart-wrenching book. I had trouble putting it down.
