Book Description:
In this rich and deeply satisfying novel by the beloved author of The Art of Mending, and Open House, a resilient woman embarks upon an unforgettable journey of adventure, self-discovery, and renewal.

Betta Nolan moves to a small town after the death of her husband to try to begin anew. Pursuing a dream of a different kind of life, she is determined to find pleasure in her simply daily routines. Among those who help her in both expected and unexpected ways are the ten-year-old boy next door, three wild women friends from her college days, a twenty-year-old who is struggling to find his place in the world, and a handsome man who is ready for love.

Elizabeth Berg's The Year of Pleasures is about acknowledging the solace found in ordinary things: a warm bath, good food, the beauty of nature, music, friends, and art. "Berg writes with humor and a big heart about resilience, loneliness, love, and hope. And the transcendence that redeems," said Andre Dubus about Durable Goods. And the same could be said about The Year of Pleasures.

This book is a pleasure to read. Yeah, I had to do it. It's an easy read in that it's a fast read, but not so easy on the emotions. At one point my husband walked in on me reading this book and saw me with tears streaming down my eyes. Not just moist eyes, I mean running rivers of tears! But at other times it makes you smile and warms you insides like a mug of hot cocoa on a cold winter day. It was so good I hardly want to let it go, but it's also so good I have to share it!

This book gave me a lot to think about with my own life. I could not put it down. First book I have read by this author and now I am on the search for everything she has written. Wonderful story. Can be hard to read for some (parts of this were hard for me), but very worthwhile. I highly recommend this book and this author.

Wow, this is my first from this author, but, it is not my last. This is a story of starting over, of living dreams and of living the way one wants to live. To be able to pick up some pointers from this book is a plus I look forward to. Enjoy this one, then, order more of hers! I am!!

I loved this book! Easy read. Follows a woman after a horrible tragedy as she begines a path of restoration and self-discovery. I have found another favorite author.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is one of the few books that I've read on losing a loved one (a scary concept in my mind) that ended reassuringly - life has to go on and sometimes there is life after...

This was such a great book! We read it as our GRINS bookclub selection for Oct '06 and enjoyed it so much that we decided to read another of Berg's books in Feb '07.

Any story from this author is great!

This is a story of women who looses her husband and how she has to start her life again without him, and then on top of all that moves to another town and how she makes new friends, and reconnects to old ones.

Elizabeth Berg is simply AMAZING...Betta Nolan is a wonderful character whose weaknesses and strengths are totally captivating. Read this story, but bring the tissues.
