What Meg Smiles lacks in wealth, she more than makes up for in audacity and determination, both quickly harnessed when Jean-Marc, Count Etranger, and his sister take up residece across the square. Now gainfully employed as companion to the counts madcap sister, meg discovers it is not her charge who occupies her thoughts, but the girls enigmatic older brother...
When meg becomes the victim of a series of strange accidentts, Jean- Marc finds his auster world turned upside down. And when it becomes alarmingly clear that Meg's life is in danger, Jean=Marcs desire for the unsuitable but enchanting woman, overcomes his sense of propriety. MOre action and intensity than most in the series.

A mystery plot of murder, there is also a ghost who scemes to get Meg to move out of the house that he haunts.
