It was Gaiman & McKean's first work together (finished in 1987.) 25 years ago.
I have to remember that, and that it was 'groundbreaking' for its time. It's dark and atmospheric, but... that's about it. It lacks conflict. And resolution. I still feel, the next day, very "what was the point?"
And that's not fair. The artwork is beautiful and weird. The narration is good.
I'm just left with - why/to whom is he telling this story? and why now? It's an exercise in memory, I guess.
Being such a fan of their subsequent work, I see where their collaboration led.
