Book Description:
In the course of a few short months, Lawrence LaRose got married, bought a decrepit house in Sag Harbor with his wife, and lost his job. This is the story of how, while negotiating a cash-strapped, divorce-teetering first year of marriage, this unemployed writer and Manhattanite ended up bluffing his way onto a Hamptons construction crew in order to learn the skills for what became an enormous home-and life-renovation.

The struggles of a newly married couple to renovate a very old and dilapidated house. Spellbinding in a different kind of way. I think I was more stressed than they were about their money problems and pressure on their marriage. Definitely anxiety producing, but very good.

A wry look at a very painful way of existance - total renovation of a newly-purchased house, withing 2 months of marriage. I've been too close to this story to view it with true objectivity, but I did find it sad, funny and completely comprehensible. Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. (Or the stitches, and the Sawzall.)

The author and his new wife buy their dream home in the Hamptons and learn the painful lesson about being house poor, and thinking that all you need is a do-it-yourself attitude. The once certified bachelor marries his dream girl, they buy a money pit of a house, and they struggle to renovate the house while keeping their marriage together, as mishaps with planning and zoning boards, contractors and themselves, cause stress beyond belief. It wasn't as "funny" as the testimonials on the book make it seem, it was more nerve-wracking and sadly relatable. A fine read, for sure.
