"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author tells a fascinating story about her life within an "Old Order Amish Community", as well as her new life and marrige outside of the community.
I knew that the rules were very rigid inside the Amish Community, but I never really knew the intricasies and the strictness of an "Old Order Amish" community, that is, until I read Irene Garrett's book. I didn't know that there were different sects of the Amish way of life.
Living in Somerset County, PA, I am more familiar with the life of an Amish and a Mennonite community that does not seem as severe as an "Old Order Amish" community, but then again, I am one of "The English" and do not know as much about their way of life as I probably think that I do.
That being said, this book definately held my attention, making it a very good and a very quick read."

"I did not enjoy this book like I thought I would. The stories were not scary to me, they were rather mundane, in fact. I thought that this book would talk of ghosts and hauntings, and there was nothing like that. I did not like the author's style of writing, either, so I read about one-fourth of the book and gave up."

"A powerful, first-hand look at a 13 year olds life in a concentration camp where cruelty and suffering is a way of life; A bowl of watered down soup or a potato peel is a delicacy and a decent pair of shoes or a scrap of tattered clothing is something to dream about. A must read for everyone. Let us never forget the victims of the Holocaust. This is a book that is suitable for both teenagers and adults."

"This is a heartbreaking true story about Mayada and her imprisonment in cell 52. She speaks about the terrible, unjust imprisonment and torture of men and women and how she and the other prisoners cope with the "horror of it all". She speaks of her life before Saddam and also of the terrors inflicted on Iraqi citizens while he was in power.
I could not put this book down. It is very powerful reading. This book is very graphic and it really makes me thankful that I live in the United States of America."

"Honestly, I was a little disappointed with this book. I have read many books on this subject and..I don't know...the information in the book was very informative, but the style in which it was written, I just did not care for. It was actually hard for me to get through the entire book, because of the writing style and not the content."

"I remember reading this book when I was about 8 years old. I am now 47 and can still say that this book is one of my favorites. I would highly recommend that our children read this book. It gives great insight into what the war was and how the people of the time sacrificed for each other."
