"I LOVED the first two books in the series. The Subtle Knife (2) ends in such a way that you have to keep reading the 3rd! But I almost wish I hadn't started the series because the only way to end it was with this book. It was literally the ending (last 50 or so pages) that destroyed the whole series for me. I felt bitter and betrayed, why had I decided to get so attached to these characters if it would end like that?! If maybe you can find a way to read this and be ok with stopping once you get that feeling in your gut that it is going in a direction that you don't like, then for sure read it! The beginning is still way interesting and attention grabbing, it's just the end. Oh the end."

"I am going to borrow the terminology from another reviewer on this site and say that the main character, Ever, is TSL (too stupid to live)! I mean come on! I realize she is in high school, but that does not mean she should act like a child and have the common sense of a toddler. I found her to be so pathetic during the whole book, that the ending of this story topped off to the whole: "dang, this book sucked" effect. The hard part is that this was the 2nd in the series, so if you like the first, naturally you want to read on as I thought I did. I know you will still read this installment if you enjoyed the first, and if you enjoy this one, then more power to you, if not, well, you were warned."

"Like most science fiction romance stories, this kept me entertained, but it didn't dazzle me. Kiara is a dancer and a princess (of a planet) and Nykyrian is one of the most feared assassins in the universe. Of course Nykyrian is fascinated by Kiara and her dancing, even though he has never really had an interest in women...
The most frusterating part about this book was Kiara. When she was a child, she was shot 3 times and watched her mother get murdered. Because of this, she says she doesn't cry and wants to fight the people who hurt the innocent: she seems like some kick ass chick who will be able to hold her own. Not the case. She cries all the time and finds it hard to believe that there are people out there that can kill others without hesitation.
So 2.5, didn't suck, wasn't great, just held my attention for 5 hours."

"Talk about a 'different' read. The writing style is...unique. It seemed like the author was writing about some otherworldly thing that we as readers know nothing about, and she forgot to tells us what it was, continuously throughout the book. Things would be randomly described, like web like tendrils coming off of a girl. WHAT? What does that even mean? Especially without any indication that there was something 'otherly' about her before. Jumps around a lot. Basically the main question, giving the book it's purpose, was left unanswered. Probably won't be continuing with the series."

"It is with books like this one where I wish I read really slowly. I was so looking forward to this book (keeping up the Anita adventures), but it was over in only a mere 2 hours! For what was there I enjoyed the heck out of it, I just wished it lasted longer. Micah was brought in more than he has been in the past couple books, which I loved to see, and Anita's lion side is the main animal crawling for attention in this one. Would have been nice to have an update on more of the men in Anita's life, it seems like each book focuses on maybe 2 or 3 main guys, but what can you do. Overall a SHORT but enjoying read."

"Knowing this is a series, definitely expected more from this first one. It's a book that I almost want to describe as a bit pathetic.
There are many cheesy romances (yes, I have read a few, sometimes it's necessary...) where I know I am reading it for pure entertainment because it is so far fetched: girl meets guys, instant connection, they profess their love for each other within a day, yada, yada. But when you add in a little paranormal to that romance, it makes it easier to read the unbelievable. Well, not this one.
VERY LITTLE paranormal going on in this story. Mostly it's all in the main characters head. No fun."

"This has been one of my favorite series, but I am sad to say that I wanted more out of The Golden City. The Traveler pulled me in with the initial introduction to the Vast Machine, the Brethen/tabula, the Harlequins, travelers, pathfinders...so much excitement and movement with Maya, Gabriel and their friends v. Tabula and their control over Michael. And the Dark River yanked me further into John Twelve Hawks world where we get to see different realms and explore the possiblities. And then we come to The Golden City as the fight between the Corrigan brothers escalates, Michael v. Gabriel, control v. freedom, safety v. chaos. I know this series has a LARGE political message, but in this third addition, I felt that I was consumed by the political message, and the story of the characters I have come to love came second, as a background. So while I will be recommending this series to anyone who loves a great read because I still find it as a whole to be in my top 3, I am not as satified as I could be with the Golden City."

"I didn't realize that this was the last book until after I finished, and I'm so glad! Maybe I would have been hoping for how I wanted it to end, instead of just enjoying the story, either way, I thought this was great. Sometimes authors don't have enough tension in their finales, but this one kept me on edge. Sad to have this end."

"As said by some others, it is hard to believe that this is a book that is not part of a series. So many characters and even subjects are brought in, and it is assumed we know something about them. And then there are so many loose ends when the story finishes. Also, there is fighting for most of the book...and do we ever really know why? There is so much left unexplained and I'm not sure how I feel about the book. Let's just say that while it entertained me, I will not be recommending it to others."

"I began reading this book because a friend gave me the whole series (it was 9 books at the time) and I figured I might as well give it a try. It didn't start as one of those books that I could not put down, but once I reached the end I realized that I loved Harry Dresden (the main man) and I needed more of his life. I finished the rest of the books in the series within a week and a half and loved every minute of it. The Dresden Files is a great series and this one kicks off the fun."

"For the first 2/3rds of the book I liked it. Had enough going on to be entertaining. Then it just went so far downhill I read the rest with a grimace and debated whether is was even worth my time. Lizzy does something that is completely out of character or at least not developed enough to make it believable. I would not recommend this to someone even to pass the time...harsh, but reality."

"Probably my favorite book of all time. I was in pain when I found I had to wait for the second installment (Dark River--which was almost better than this one) and now again I have to wait for the 3rd---BUT IT IS WORTH IT! Not only does this this book have action and mystery, it has some of the greatest characters I have had the chance to meet. Enjoy"

"I was happily reminded why I loved this series. I have missed Harry ("hells bells") and this one jumped straight into his crazy mixed up world of magic, vampires, conspiracies, werewolves... not to mention a new creature, of which I am happy to say that it only exists within this book. It is true that this one is a little bit more on the darker side in that there isn't too much to hope for (except for the continued life of Harry, but what else is new) due to everything that happens, but now the books that follow can go into the Black Council and the HUGE battle that I'm sure will pop its head up soon."
