There has been much controversy about this book. If anyone bothered to read it through to the end, they would have noticed that the author herself questions her Chinese parenting style and comes to the conclusion that while you need to support and push your children to find their own strengths, you also have to do that within their own personalities. There is no one size fits all approach but strong values and concepts will prevail. She also demonstrates that motherhood is hard hard work.

The story of Dinah is captivating. I read it in a single day. The Bible story is portrayed with real people with real problems and trials. I laughed, I cried and felt the story in a way that I never did before. Diamant makes the distant past real.

Wonderful book about what it means to be human - how music transcends us from the bestial and is what is lasting in the human experience.
Short and moving.
The only negative was that I had to think that this was a much better read with more poetic narrative in the original Catalan... small problem - I don't read Catalan so this had to do....

When you look at the plot synopsis you think this is going to be terrible. Who wants to read about the plague? This is a good story told by a woman who lived through the trials of that time. You finish the book feeling satisfied, as after a hearty meal. I would highly recommend this.
