"Beautifully written, loving, warm, tender tale of family life and love. This was a happy marriage between two intelligent, humorous people and their children. Now, more than 8 years after her death, Calvin Trillin offers us a portrait of Alice Trillin - a stunningly beautiful woman who was an educator who was equally at home teaching at a university or helping out at a drug center, raising her girls, or working as a gifted writer. This beautiful love story deals with devastating loss in a way you can relate to, whether you have suffered the same or not. It is a fast and absorbing read. I do recommend it and suggest passing it on then to a good friend."

"In many ways, this is a tragic story, but also a wonderful one. Who knew those two things were mutually possible, but they are. As the Chicago Tribune said, "Fascinating...A tragic saga, but at the same time it often reads like a thriller filled with acts of extraordinary courage, descriptions of dangerous journeys and a series of secret identities."
"Driven to uncover their roots, Fremont (the author) and her sister pieced together an astonishing story: of Siberian Gulags and Italian royalty, of concentration camps and buried lives. After Long Silence is about the devastating price of hiding the truth, about families; about the steps we take, foolish or wise, to protect ourselves and our loved ones. No one who reads this book can be unmoved, or fail to understand the seductive, damaging price of secrets."
This author's memoir is a harrowing journey and a very brave attempt to insure that her family's heroic suffering has not been in vain. It is such a compelling, moving and eloquently written story. There are times it will leave you breathless and at all times you will find it a reminder of how fortunate you are to be reading it and not living it."

"A wonderful, warm winner of a book! Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff's story about the amazing dog Gracie will fill your heart, make you laugh and ultimately may make you cry. Gracie, a litter reject, albino, deaf and partially blind with big blue eyes will crawl into your heart, turn around a few times, and finally snuggle down, and that's just the beginning! She not only changed her owners' feelings, she also changed their lives in a huge way. Believe me, if only you leave yourself open to the possibilities, miracles DO happen.
So do yourself a big favor and read this book. You won't be sorry. (Unless you're sorry it eventually ends.) I stayed up until 4:30 this morning so I could finish it. I just couldn't put it down and turn it off for the night."

""Patrick Bateman is handsome, well-educated, intelligent. He works by day on Wall Street, earning a fortune to complement the one he was born with. His nights he spends in ways we can't even imagine. He is twenty-six years old and living his own American Dream."
"This is a well-written beautifully controlled, careful, important novel. A masterful satire and a ferocious, hilarious, ambitious, inspiring piece of writing, which has large elements of Jane Austin at her vitriolic best. An important book." ---Katherine Dunn
"The first novel to come along in years that takes on deep and Dostoyevskian themes..... (Ellis) is showing older authors where the hands have come to on the clock."
---Norman Mailer, Vanity Fair
"In American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis imaginatively explores the incomprehensible depths of madness and captures the insanity of violence in our time or any other. Patrick Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, Bateman earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Expressing his true self through torture and murder, Bateman prefigures an apocalyptic horror that no society could bear to confront.""

"Terrific book! One of Grisham's best I thought. I felt as if I learned a lot from reading this book and could feel my blood pressure rising at the thought that this is really how things are done in our judicial system. It made me SO angry! I still think about it often and I wonder what we, as citizens can do to make things honest. Sadly, I don't think there are many solutions.
Do read this book for enjoyment and excitement and most of all, for the knowledge it will give you. You'll be smarter and better for it. It will really open your eyes to the way things are done in not just third world countries, but our country too."

"Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.
Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.
On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoe at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.
Heartwarming and totally engaging. You will fall in love with Enzo, a dog with enormous understanding. Perhaps you have had a dog like him who seemed to understand more than you thought was possible. If so, you have been blessed.
I wasn't sure I would like this book, told from the dog's point of view, but it was a treasure and I loved it. You will too, I'm sure."

"This was my first Bentley Little book and I really enjoyed it until about 3/4 of the way through. I've lived in a community with a homeowner's association and know how annoying they can be, however there came a part of the book where the story seemed to get really out of hand. (one friend disappears, then a couple of friends disappearing - not found after trying to hunt them down, and then just dropping it. I wouldn't just drop searching for my friends, believe me. Since calling the police and the FBI didn't work, I'd call the newspapers, report it to radio or TV stations, make it known) The story seemed to get even wilder and far less believable. I did not like the ending at all. I did enjoy the earlier part of the book enough to try reading another. His reviews have been terrific, so I'll give his books another chance."

"Wonderful, intense, helpful, mind-opening, expands your ability to do journaling, really good to have. What can I say except, It was so nice, I bought it TWICE! (and haven't regretted it once.) I've had this book as part of my "MUST ALWAYS HAVE AVAILABLE" personal library section. It is a book I've referred to time and again. You'll be happy to have it too.
Having this book was like having a Journal Workshop on hand. I've personally attended a Journal Workshop seminar, which I loved, and having this book is like taking the seminar home with you. The ONLY reasons I'm making this book available here is that (1) I do have another copy and (2) I feel that this is a subject (and book) I want to share. Keeping both copies for myself seems selfish and unkind."

"Beautifully written true story about Rick Bragg's grandfather. You feel as if you are right there. You can smell it, you can taste it and you can hear the voices so well, you could actually imitate them yourself. Bragg writes that way.
I loved this book, but possibly just a tad less than I enjoyed "It's All Over But The Shoutin'". I understand why Bragg won the Pulitzer Prize. Do yourself a favor; read them both."

""Richard Cohen may be legally blind, but his book paints an incredibly sharp picture of what it is like to live passionately - with joy, love and anger - when besieged by chronic illnesses and their relentless artillery of uncertainty, fear, pain and disability. His life is drama on a human scale and well told."
"I cannot remember ever being more profoundly moved by any book I have ever read. Richard Cohen says he is less of a person than he was. He is wrong. He's a giant of a man who won't ever be defeated. Don't miss this book. It'a brilliant!"
This book is fascinating, brutally honest and moving. How much we are capable of enduring is amazing. We'll never know until faced with the choice. Some of us fall apart and others stand up with a strength we didn't realize we had. I have such admiration for Richard Cohen and his wonderful wife, Meridith Vieira who exhibits an amazing strength filled with love, honesty and great humor as well. Do yourself a favor and read all about it."

""So, did I like this book, you ask? Let me tell you...my enemies should never enjoy such a book! "Throughout history, Jews around the world have had plenty of reasons to lament and kvetch. And for a thousand years, they've had the perfect language for it. Yiddish has proven incredibly useful and durable." Featuring chapters of curse words, food, sex, and even death, the book is full of wit, knowledge, history and hilarity. You'll not only learn a lot, you'll be laughing while you're learning. This is the book that FINALLY answers the question, "how many words are there for "penis" and why? Many years ago when I was in High School, I asked a fellow classmate whose parents were European Jews to teach me something in Yiddish so I could surprise my beloved grandmother. He taught me a phrase, and I practiced with him for days. When I next saw my grandma, I told her, with as much heartfelt expression as a 14 year old could muster, "Bubbie, solst vaksn vi a tsibele, mitn kop in dr'erd." (Translation: You should only grow like an onion--with your head in the ground.) It did not go over well and although Bubbie forgave me, I've never forgiven my classmate. As much as you'll want to keep this book in your library, you'll probably want to pass it on too, so your family and friends can enjoy it as much as you."

"THE CALYPSO DIRECTIVE by Brian Andrews
The Calypso Directive, by Brian Andrews is a sure-to-grab- your-attention thriller about genetic exploitation, high tech science and kidnapping written with a sure hand and great talent. Without question, it is one of the best books I've read in a long time.
Shortly after starting to read it, I could feel my blood pressure rising, my pulse increasing and my heart rate going up.
Almost immediately, the story begins as a compelling and very exciting search for the truth. Will Foster, the hero, is caught up in a world of fear and confusion. You become caught up in it too.
There were many times when I had to brace myself before I turned the page. I was that frightened. I would highly recommend this excellent book, but I would suggest you don't read it at night when you're alone in the house. I remember telling my husband, "I'm reading a book. Would you please hold my hand?" I can't wait for this author's next book!

"A doctor and his patients experience the human side of healing. This is a terrific, beautifully written, sensitive and interesting book. Dr. Judge is a wonderful writer. We have rarely been given the opportunity to share in the inner feelings of doctors. How are they affected by their patients? What really goes into the making of a physician?
You will surely enjoy this book. It is one of the few books I have read twice, only because I was sure I would get even more out of the second reading. I sincerely recommend this. You'll be glad you read it. This is a book you'll want to share with friends too."

"Bourdain's books are books I do not share, do not exchange and reread when I can. He is a wonderful, open writer. His sense of humor is terrific and his language, while a bit salty, does not offend. In fact, it adds to the writing.
Yes, "A Cook's Tour" is a keeper and is fascinating. We have traveled to many countries and since we are both foodies and I am a very serious cook, food is always a major subject of interest to us.
(I once sent an order of chicken soup back to the kitchen in China because the soup was jet black with several noodle-looking things hanging from a foot. I was shocked and a bit disgusted to tell the truth. It was several years and 14 more trips to China later when I accidently discovered that it had come from a special jet black chicken and was supposed to be especially healthy. I'm a bit sorry now that I never tasted it.)
Bourdain shares some of his wonderful, interesting experiences and you may find yourself canceling appointments, putting off the dusting and washing to just keep reading. His writing certainly holds your attention. By all means, check it out."

"Professor Croy has created some of the most startling and thought-provoking photography of the modern age. In this book he explains every step that went into the making of these extremely individual pictures. He explains how the idea developed and what methods he used to bring it to fruition. He persuades the reader to look at life, his camera and the whole photographic process anew.
Photography is not merely a mans of copying life on the surface. It can get right down to essentials. It can enable a photographer to conjure up formsand shapes of limitless variety and to present his own individual ideas of what life is all about. He copies and recopies, cropping and rearranging the subject, producing intermediate negatives and positives, eliminating tones adding screens and tints. His inventive powers are limitless.
All images are in black and white which really shows you the basics of the photographic process and lets you really investigate the subject without the distraction of color.
He shares his visions and gives you so much to learn.
I did darkroom work such as this for years and it was perhaps some of the most
satisfying, inventive and creative work I've ever done. You will love this book!"
