She wants her ex-husband back. He's determined to impress another woman. So the housewife and the race car driver oversee makeovers of one another. The transformations work great in their romantic lives except that they are falling in love with each other. With a heroine who goes from powerless to poised, a delicious bad-boy hero and the clever use of journal entries, CATHRYN by Shannon Waverly abounds with touching moments and richly drawn characters.

Cathryn McGrath is the paragon of female adulthood. She is a wonderful wife and mother. Part of her core essence ends when her spouse Dylan, informs her the world's changing and he walks out on her and their children, for another woman.

Enter, super-sexy bad-boy, Tucker Lang...

Before he left the island of Harmony when he was 21, all the girls wanted to ride with Tucker Lang -- while all their mothers wanted to lock up their daughters. Tucker was the town's poster bad boy.

After being away for years, Tucker now returns to Harmony. He sees CATHRYN and realizes he still is attracted to her. She reciprocates although she wonders about men in general. As CATHRYN and Tucker fall in love, the reformed bad boy knows he must deal with a personal problem before he can commit to CATHRYN.

CATHRYN is a tender contemporary romance starring two lead characters, who, for varying reasons, distrust love. The story line is fun as Cathryn and Tucker struggle to forge a relationship that both question even knowing they have found their soul mate. Shannon Waverly completes her warm trilogy of three friends finding love (see JULIA and LAUREN) with this beguiling tale.

Note: JULIA (Circle of Friends, Book 1), LAUREN (Circle of Friends, Book 2) and CATHRYN (Circle of Friends, Book 3)

FASCINATION - Samantha Hunter's HOTWIRES trilogy/mini-series, Book #1
[2 Stars - Romantic Times Book Reviews]

For five years, FBI agent Ian Chandler has controlled all aspects of Sage Matthews' life. Sage was convicted of committing computer crimes when a boyfriend duped her into releasing a virus on the Net. Ian was assigned to monitor her, and she's had nothing to do with computers or the people who use them since. In five more days, Sage will be rid of him for good. Then her old boyfriend shows up, wanting her help, and Ian wonders if he can trust her.

FASCINATION by Samantha Hunter is well written and has some sympathetic secondary characters. But Ian is a thoroughly unpleasant hero who acts unprofessionally and cruel. It's hard to understand why Sage is attracted to him, unless he's just another bad choice.

They'd been friends growing up on the small East Coast island of Harmony--Julia, Lauren and Cathryn, Amber and the others. Now one of them is dead, and Julia Lewis goes home for the first time in seven years.

Julia, a disc jockey returns to the east coast island of her youth to attend a friends funeral and is shocked to learn that the apparent suicide has been ruled a murder, with all the local residents under suspicion.

Julia's grief makes this a bittersweet experience. But coming home is also a chance to revive old memories and reconnect with her circle of old friends.
And to fall--hard--for a Boston journalist named Ben Grant who now owns the island's weekly paper.

Still, despite Julia's feelings for Ben, she can't accept his accusations about Amber's death-- first, that it was murder, not suicide. And second, that Charlie Slocum, the island's chief of police and father-figure to Julia, ran a sloppy investigation.

With his charming smile and insightful questions, Ben's causing all sorts of complications in Harmony's little world. And in Julia's...

Review Date: 7/29/2006

LAUREN is the second book in Shannon Wavery's trilogy/mini-series, "Circle of Friends."

Lauren is the second in a series of books written about four girls who grew up on the island of Harmony, south of Cape Cod, MA. Lauren returns to Harmony 12 years after leaving in shame with her family and falls in love again with a man from her past.

Years ago they were in love, but his parents interfered and she left town in disgrace. Now a successful real estate investor, LAUREN is back, hoping to make the town and its leader -- her old lover -- take notice.

Although the hero's inability to deal with his parents weakens his character slightly, Shannon Waverly creates a strong, sensitive heroine, emotional intensity and good discord.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS - Karen Kendall's AFTER HOURS trilogy/mini-series, Book #2

When hairdresser Marly Fine is brought in to cut the hair of John Hammersmith, aka The Hammer, Florida's Republican governor, she tries to keep her cool. It's great publicity, even if his politics make her cringe. When he insists she's the one for him, she doesn't believe it, but she does find him as charming and persuasive personally as he is politically. But complications arise when it becomes clear that his advisers and father have picked out the woman he's to marry -- and it isn't Marly.

Midnight Madness, by Karen Kendall, is a fun, totally silly and unbelievable book. The political theme, strangely serious in this light romance, highlights their differences.

MIDNIGHT OIL - Karen Kendall's AFTER HOURS trilogy/mini-series, Book #1

Former football player Troy Barrington wants to open a sports store in a shopping mall he owns and has to break one of the current leases. After Hours Salon and Day Spa is his choice, but he has to find a legal excuse to force out the business. Manager and massage therapist Peggy Underwood has decided to take a year off from men. When she meets the hunky Troy, she forgets her resolve and falls back into her old pattern of following her instincts without thinking.

Midnight Oil, by Karen Kendall, is a cute story with a satisfying subplot involving girls and sports, but Peggy isn't as sympathetic a character as the heroine might be, and the writing doesn't sparkle.
