How can you miss when history is presented painlessly in comics? We use the Asterix series in homeschool and I rate them highly as introductory material.

Exploring the History of Medicine: From the Ancient Physicians of Pharaoh to Genetic Engineering (Exploring (New Leaf Press))
Review Date: 8/2/2011

I gave this book a 3 rating because Tiner does not include a history of eastern medicine. The Chinese, Indians, and other Asians used many medical techniques. Yes, the author begins with Egypt, but western physicians are just now admitting that eastern techniques are legitimate medical treatments. I will still use this book for home school, but broaden its scope. Perhaps New Leaf Press would back a new edition with added chapters.

Fascinating case studies of people displaying exceptional musical ability--some quite suddenly after injury or disease. The book's lively writing style keeps it from becoming a science text. The development of perfect pitch in children correlated with tonal languages was especially interesting. I loaned the book to my dd's Suzuki violin teacher, who is pleased that Sacks' information confirms that early music exposure increases brain function.

I wish we had this book years ago because it would have explained behaviors and responses to environment in our daughter. This book takes a positive note and should be read by everyone involved with children on any level--from grandparent to library worker, day care provider, club leader, etc.

The Soul Tells A Story: Engaging Creativity With Spirituality In The Writing Life
Review Date: 11/29/2011

This book will nurture writers and gently encourage them to write true. Ms. Wright, an author and editor, understands how writers can be constrained by culture and faith. She uses illustrations from her own life to help writers overcome fears about using real characters with problems, and constructing plots with depth.

I give this book of poetry high ratings, not because it is great poetry, but because the topics are spiritually uplifting and the poems are worth meditating on for devotions.

This deceptively simple book is a very useful tool for all stages of writing. Pages are tiled and labled with word categories like "To Provide an Example": to clarify, to illuminate, an analogy, etc. Blank pages at the end for your own lists follow a complete 2-page, 4-column list of substitutes for "said."

Great resource for all ages!
