I enjoyed the book from the author's perspective, Earlier I'd read Charlie Wilson's War by Crile, so I had a fairly good idea if the intricate involvement of the contribution of U.S. arms to free the Afghanis from Russia.
The book shared more of the family's experiences than the Masterpiece Theater film did, made in the '60s or '70s. The family had a much more difficult time establishing their coffee farm in the African bush than Isak Dinesen during the same era. I thoroughly enjoyed the book..
A Fortunate Life has been my favorite book for over 20 yrs. And I highly recommend it to people who enjoy reading about others' lives. Mr. Facey was a man of incredible courage, character and integrity. The hardships he faced and overcame would break an average person, yet he had such a grateful spirit. Just amazing! All things Australia fascinate me too. Wish I'd had the honor of knowing this gentleman. My life is richer for having known him through his book.
