"This is a cute book for tweens. It deals with peer pressure and what it means for an individual to be cool. Mariah is a graduating 5th grader who desperately wants to see her rock idol, while trying to be friends with a girl who embarrasses her clique by shopping at a thrift store. Mariah learns the meaning of identity, friendship, and family."

"This is a fantastic explanation of modern racism. It discusses the rise of racism during the age of European exploration and conquest. Then it details the inheritance of ideology passed from Britain to America and how it became an ingrained part of American culture. It outlines how scientific myths were generated to justify racial mistreatment. Finally, it discusses the challenge of ridding an entire culture of a destructive ideology."
