John Jakes is a great storyteller. This is a story about James Chance who dreams of becoming a rich Californian. It tells about his adventures along the way. You read about William Randolph Hearst and other powerful men of the era.

Do you remember the "Spenser for Hire" TV show? This is the author of the series or at least where the ideas for the TV series originated. It is a fast paced book with lots of action. Spenser and his partner, Hawk, are the main characters and try to find their friend, Susan who appears to be kidnapped.

I did not not want to read this book orginially because I thought it would be too sad and heart wrenching. It takes a sad situation and makes it memorable, funny and touching.It is emotional but in a good way. Alice Sebold is a wonderful writer.
