As so often is the case, the book was much, much better than the movie. Wharton is a master at portraying the intricacies of Victorian society and the characters' inner lives.

A really good read. Very affecting; a nice combination of a woman with somewhat magical powers and an intriguing murder mystery. She does a nice job of making the Southern California locale another character in the story. I wish she were planning to make this the first of a series, but I think her subsequent book goes in another direction.
