The Basketball Diaries: The Classic about Growing Up Hip on New York's Mean Streets
Review Date: 8/3/2009

"I believe I wore the grooves out on Jim Carroll's "Catholic Boy" album. After reading the "Basketball diaries" I'm amazed he lived long enough to record it. Jim was inspired to start writing a diary at 12 after reading Jack Kerouac's "On the Road". It is a brutally honest look into life on the streets of New York. The progression into heroin addiction and the things he did to get the next high is chilling."

"In this book Dante has to confront her past. It's a very emotional ride. The abuse that was heaped on the students of Rigger Hall was extreme. The students have spent their short lives trying to forget, Dante included. When a serial killer starts murdering members from the school the past starts to rear it's ugly head. The content is no pretty but well handled."

Die For Me: The Terrifying True Story of the Charles Ng & Leonard Lake Torture Muders
Review Date: 8/3/2009

"I didn't like the title at all.....but the author did a pretty good job of going in depth about Lake's life. I was surprised that he included a large majority of Ng's trial."

"Robert McGee is a comic book artist that has lost his muse. While traveling the east coast with his family the car breaks down in Missing Mile, N.C. They rent a dilapidated house on Violin Street with the last of their money. Robert sinks into depression and the bottle. Trevor wakes up one morning to find his mother and little brother have been murdered by his father who then committed suicide. At the age of five Trevor has lost everything but the talent his father passed on to him. When he is 25 he returns to Missing Mile to confront his past.
Zack is a 19 year old computer hacker who is wanted by the FBI. He hits the road and also ends up in Missing Mile. Zack doesn't trust anyone due to the abuse he received at the hands of both his parents.
These to damaged souls meet and for the first time they have a reason to live and love. They stay in the haunted house and work out their nightmares together.
There is a wonderful cast of characters that revolve around this story. I loved it.

*disclaimer* contains graphic violence, homosexual relationships, blood and gore, and people smoking ganja like cigarettes. If none of this bothers you it's a great read."

"believe that Erik Larson can take any topic and make it interesting and entertaining. That's exactly what he's done with "Isaac's Storm".
On September 8, 1900 Galveston was the site of the worst natural disaster in American history. A hurricane that seemed to come out of nowhere destroyed most of the town and took more then 6000 lives. The storm surge swept the town and destroyed everything in it's path.
The political aspect of this story was fascinating. Willis Moore was the head of the Weather Bureau and ruled it with a iron hand. He believed that his department was a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Because of this the Weather Bureau had to have a spotless record. This lead to cover-ups and catastrophe."

"Molochai, Twig and Zillah are beautiful nomad vampires who crash land in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. They wander into a bar run by a vampire over 300 years old named Christian. Christian has gone most of his life without meeting anyone of his race. He is fascinated and bewitched by this out of control group. When they leave town Christian is left with a pregnant teenager carrying Zillah's child. She dies giving birth to a boy he names Nobody.

Ghost and Steve live in Missing Mile, North Carolina and have a band called Lost Souls.
Ghost has second sight and spends most of his time taking care of Steve who is nursing a broken heart. Ann is Steve's ex-girlfriend trying to pick up the pieces of a violent breakup.

Jason, also know as Nothing, feels a overwhelming connection to the music after hearing the underground tape.

All of these characters end up in Missing Mile and the events that unfold are mind boggling.

Even when I don't like what Poppy is writing about I'm sucked into the writing style.

Disclaimer: Extreme violence, rape and incest."

"The last two books I read at one sitting. This one seemed to be missing something.
Mona Lisa is kidnapped to help cure a Monere warrior who is moonsick. While curing him she becomes pregnant. Dante's life is interwoven with her past and he is cursed to relive his life over and over. This story had a lot of potential but seemed to fall short. It was redeemed a bit by the ending. Still not a bad story and good set up for the next book."

"The summer of love is the center piece for this story. A serial killer named the Death Tripper is stalking and killing flower children. John Sparrow is tapped to investigate the killings. With the help of Amy Cole, and underground weekly writer for The Rag, he tries to infiltrate the Haight-Ashbury community to track the killer. He is blocked on all sides by George Moon, a militant cop and his riot squad, and the community itself. Even though the killer is revealed midway the book it doesn't take away from the story. An interesting look at both side of an historic time in American History."

"When I picked up this book I thought it would be paranormal but was pleasantly surprised with the sci/fi - paranormal blend. Dante Valentine is a necromancer who is given a no win job by the devil. He gives her his right hand demon, Japhrimel, to help increase her chances. With friends and Jap's help she begins an almost impossible job. Fast paced, action filled read."
