When I first picked up the book I was trying to imagine how an entire book could be written just about someone's dog. But, Grogan is really writing a family memoir centered around his beloved pet. Anyone who loves animals and most certainly anyone who has had a "rambunctious" pet will smile, groan and be shaking their head saying "Oh, yeah,,,I get that!" as they follow Marley through puppyhood to adulthood.

A story that mimics my 10 years with my Dalamatian Sadie. It made me laugh and think about similiar times I had with Sadie. I hope to be like John Grogan when he had to part with Marley. I passed the book on but would read it again and again.

This book is a heartwarmer! Marley is your typical lab, playful, loving, loyal and totally destructive. They love to chew up everything. I know because I had a yellow lab who ate through our air conditioning wiring twice, the phone line, totally chewed through our wooden fence, dug up half the plants in our backyard, ate holes in my son's brand new comforter, and would bark back at me when scolded--and then pout. He also learned how to turn on the back yard faucet, flood the yard and roll in the mud. Ah yes, good times, good times. Marley, however, really IS the world's worst lab I've ever heard of. He put my dog to shame. But Marley will make you fall in love with him in spite of all his flaws. How can any dog lover not fall in love with a lab puppy? This is a true story, so get ready to laugh and cry. Marley is the type of dog who is one of a kind and will remain in your heart long after you read this book. Can't wait for the movie that's being made.

John Grogan puts into words what anyone with a soul-mate pet feels into the words we wish we could express. The story makes you laugh and makes you cry. One of the best animal reads since James Harriot.

This book was given to me by a family member, as I have a yellow lab. I immediately began relating to the stories of getting used to a new puppy and all the personality quirks that you learn to love when raising a new dog. It started out for me as a great light-hearted book that I related to a lot.

However, I soon felt an eerie connection with the book... it began to mirror my own life more and more. My husband and I had welcomed in our yellow lab pup into our home, and we became pregnant around the time I started reading the book. I even had the book with me the day I went to the doctor's office for an ultrasound when I was concerned that something wasn't right with the pregnancy. Afterward, while sitting in a room waiting for the results, I re-read the chapter where the author describes the miscarriage of he and his wife experienced. Shortly after, I was told I had miscarried. It was a devastating experience, but I found a small comfort in being able to read how the situation affected another couple. It helped me grieve, but it also helped me start to heal.

The beauty of this book is the way the story of life is told, weaving lessons of love throughout. It's not just the tale of the family dog (as entertaining as those parts are!), but the entire family. It is particularly special to me, and I'll hold it near my heart for a long time.

I loved this book. It was such a great read. John Grogan does an outstanding job of choosing just the right words to illustrate his old friend, Marley, and his crazy canine antics. The story of this hilariously bad dog and his human family really puts in perspective what is most important to us in life or rather what should be most important to all of us - unconditional love, joy, loyalty, devotion and contentment.

I laughed, cried and was extremely moved by this heartwarming memoir. Pick it up even if you aren't a pet owner, and you'll love it, too.

Absolutely delightful book. Reminds me of our first dog, that we loved dearly and proceeded to damage doors, floors, pillows, etc. You fall in love with Marley, but understand the "dangers" of picking up someone else's problem pet. Gave this to my son-in-law to read when he was all set to pick up a rescue lab from a shelter.
Highly recommend the book for a multitude of reasons, one being it is just a good read.

I loved this book and gave it my first 5 star rating ever. It made me laugh out load at times and cry at other times, but entertained me throughout the book. If you are an animal lover, you will enjoy this book. I could not put it down and couldn't wait to see what antics Marley got into next. I highly recommend this book.

I'm a dog lover and so I loved this book. I have owned many dogs over the years and saw in Marley many of the antics my own dogs have gone through. I laughed and cried and remembered my heartache when I had to put down one of mine. This book is written with feeling and honesty and it will go on my keeper shelf.

My kids saw this movie then suggested I read the book (which I had had for 6 months or so in my "to be read" shelf). I thought it would be a typical "newly-wed couple gets dog, then has kids, dog gets along with kids then dies" story so I was prepared to not like the book. But Grogan is a good writer and put lots of interesting details in the story-telling. I knew Marley would die (as all dogs do plus my kids sad the movie ending was soooo sad, sniff-sniff) but I, too, cried at the end. Any dog lover will enjoy this book.

In "Marley & Me," John Grogan invites the readers to share the life of his Marley, the "world's worst dog." Grogan not only shares funny stories about living with the "world's worst dog," but illustrates how Marley was an vital part of his family, and how Marley shared various experiences with him as he made his transition from newlywed to nearly middle aged father. Grogan really makes each scene come alive as clearly as a snapshot (I could just picture some of Marley's antics and found myself laughing aloud a number of times), making this book a pleasure to read from start to finish. He really does an excellent job of describing Marley as beloved but flawed, something anyone with a pet/ who ever had a pet can probably relate to. Most importantly, he shows how Marley helped him grow by discussing the lessons he had taught him, just by being the hyperactive-drooling-food stealing-diaper sniffing-obedience school flunking-eccentric dog that he was born to be.

I highly recommend checking this book out. It's a light & quick read that will stay with you long after you finish it! :-)

I am not a big fan of animal books so I was prepared to not like this book, but it was a choice of my F2F book group. Although I love dogs, I didn't want to read a memoir about ‘Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog”, sure it would be a sentimental remembrance that just wouldn't appeal to me. So imagine my surprise as I was utterly captivated by the story of Marley, if not the world's worst dog, surely a difficult one. A very large, headstrong and virtually untrainable Labrador retriever, Marley was also lovable, steadfast and the true definition of man's best friend. His absolute joy for life and his love of his fmily came through on every page. Marley was not an idealized version of a dog, a Hollywood Lassie or Rin Tin Tin both of whom probably never sniffed anyone's crotch. He had the heart of a puppy through all of his 12 years, but at 90 pounds his exuberance was often of a destructive nature. Marley hated thunderstorms, loved the ocean, was protective of his family and always ready with a big slobbery kiss. I give a lot of credit to the Grogan family for seeing the good in their beloved dog, he is the kind of adorable puppy that when grown often ends up back in a shelter. For all the love Marley gave them, they returned it in equal measure. A funny and thoroughly enjoyable memoir.

This was such a fun read. After reading this book a little black lab pup was dumped on the dirt road next to my house. While he's not quite the hellian that Marley is, they do share a lot of the same characteristics. They are just too much fun!!! I highly recommend this for a light, fun, fast read.

This book brought back so many memories of my dog and the great times we had together. I read, laughed, cried and took Marley straight to my heart. Reading Marley and Me was like looking through my life. As newlyweds we brought home a Chinese Pug puppy who chose us. When I became pregnant and put on bedrest she refused to leave my side. Food and water were brought to her and she only left my side when carried to the backyard by my husband for her to have a bathroom break. She went through two pregnancy loss with me. And loved the two babies we finally brought home. She and I had 12 of the best years of my life together. I even had to take her to work with me to stop her howling and crying every day while I was gone. Marley and me brought all this back. This is the best book I have read in years. The book went miles beyond what the movie did. I loved the book but I don't know if I can read it again and go throught the emotions. It took me 2 days to read this book. I could not put it down. Marley's story will change your life.

This is a cute story that turns very sad at the end. I didn't go the movie because I didn't want to cry all over again. There are many funny stories as those of us who own dogs can relate to. If you're not into sappy dog-love stories, I would skip this book. Otherwise, you'll probably love it.

I read this book in 1.5 days, which is really hard to do in my household, with the kids school, after school activities, work, husband, and the volunteer work we do. I read while getting ready in the morning at lunch, during the socccer games rest times, during ballet lessons, using the toothpaste as my 'page holder downer' while I blow dried my hair. That's how AWESOME this book it.

Before Marley and Me, I don't really recall a book that had me go through the motion of EVERY emotion humans feel. I've never laughed so hard, I've never been mad so much, and the feeling of sadness almost outdid one of my favorite books. This is such a heart warming, well written, so worth reading book!

This is an excellent book about a young family and their very rambunctiious, high-maintenance yellow lab. I laughed out loud at nearly every page and I cried harder than I've ever cried at the end. John Grogan is an amazing writer - he makes you feel like part of the family and you can vividly envision every scene.

If you are a dog lover, or, if you just love a good, clean book, you will enjoy every word of this one.

I've never read a book that made be cry and laugh. I usually hate when a book makes me cry because I don't like wasting time reading a book just to feel sad. But, this book was so well written and this is just such a beautiful story. I finished reading it at 2 in the morning and when I was done I pulled my 1 yr old Lab out of bed just to hug her and than I had to hug my cat too. Even if you are not a dog owner or dog lover you will enjoy this story about true unconditional love.

Marley & Me is a great book. I connected with the stroy in a way I didn't think was possible. I don't own a dog right now, and the one dog that we have owned from puppyhood is living with my parents. Through Marley's owner, I felt like I was there for the whole ride. From that first fateful meeting right up until the end. This was a book that made me laugh and cry.

John Grogan is a wonderful storyteller. Through him, we see Marley for what he was and not some dog that deserved sainthood. We see him as he was: an energitec ball of life that got himself into some interesting situations. The one certainty with Marley was that he lived and loved with a ferocity that one only wishes can touch their lives.

Being an owner of a 2-year old chocolate lab I could relate to almost everything in this book. At times I felt like I was reading about my own dog. Any dog lover, not just lab owners, will enjoy reading Marley and Me. You actually start to feel a bond with Marley and you will laugh, get angry, and cry right along with the Grogans. I enjoyed reading this book immensely!! And even though my chocolate lab can drive me crazy at times, after reading this book it helps you to remember just how special they really are and how much they mean to us!! A wonderful book! Two thumbs up for John Grogan (and Marly too, of course)!!!

This is a very good story. Remind me of my experience with my dog even I do not have a labrador, but a corgi. The end is so emotional that make any dog owner to think about the life spam of our dogs and a life without our furry friends. I could not avoid to cry as I read the last few chapters. My dog was wondering what was wrong with me because tears were running on my cheeks. Great book for dogs owners.

Laughed all the way through it, but I still wonder about these people, if they had started when Marley was a pup there wouldn't have been quite so much exitement. I laughed and cried all the way through-a worthy read. One of those stories to be read over again...I didn't tell my Sucha (a wonderful black lab-but hey I'm biased) about Marley's bad boy habits though...but you'll enjoy them too.

“Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog John Grogan”

I give this book Two Paws Up. Loved it!!! I've listened to it on CD no less than five times.

“Marley & Me” will take you on adventures that will make you laugh so hard you cry. It is a “Must Read” for anyone who owns a Labrador. You will develop a special bond with Marley and John. I think every dog owner, or everyone who thought of owning a dog should read this wonderful book.

The only hard part for me was towards the end of the book as Marley aged, just as all lifelong companions do. I could relate to all that Marley (the dog) was dealing with and the questions and answers of John & his family. Like I told my friends, if you need to stop before the last chapter or two….you will still have a wonderful read.

For myself, I am happy that I did not stop reading as Marley aged. The last chapter touched my heart. If you can deal with the age issue….get a box of tissues and read on.

Also you may want to note there are two versions of this book:

(1) “Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog John Grogan” (First book?)

(2) Marley: A Dog Like No Other - Reading Level: Ages 9-12 (same story…but age appropriate for younger readers)

I have both versions and I've enjoyed both. This is one book (or 2) I will be keeping for myself and will be buying copies to give as gifts.

What a great book. Anyone who, as an adult, has ever owned a dog would enjoy this book. That is especially true if your dog had a stubborn mind of it's own. I laughed out loud, not caring if anyone heard me. John Grogan does an outstanding job of capturing life with a family dog, inter-weaving the lives of his growing family and their incorrible Lab. And when the inevitable end comes I found tears slipping down my face as I related to his story and remembered the special dogs in my life. I won't be able to repost this because I need to share it with the important dog-lovers in my extended family. It is a "Must Read" book.

This book was heart warming. It shares the ups and downs of caring for a pet (specifically one who has major problems during thunder storms). You will laugh, you will cry, and then you'll want to cuddle with your pet.

I was disappointed, just a collection of not-terribly-amusing anecdotes about a family dog. There seemed to be a lot of filler. Most of the book was about the dog's puppyhood, 1991-1993, one gets the impression that the author didn't get around to writing about the experience from that time until 10 years later, so there isn't a good flow to the story, for me.

"John and Jenny were jusst beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same."
--Best dog book ever! i fell in love with Marley and ended up finishing the book on the floor next to my furball dog. Furr in one hand and kleenex in the other.

Beautifully written, it goes through the entire life of Marley the yellow Lab. It's a great story, but since I'm a professional groomer who has to put up with badly-trained, lunk-headed dogs too often as it is, I really didn't want to read about one more! John Grogan is such a terrific writer, and his love of this incorrigible dog comes through in his great style. I'm just so glad that he's learned since Marley (and hope other well-meaning but somewhat ignorant dog owners come to understand, too!) that there is no reason to have such an out-of-control dog.... Dog Behaviorists can make almost any dog a well-behaved, happy member of any family! But as John Grogan said in an interview, if he'd known that when Marley was around he wouldn't have had this story to write. I'm glad he did.

This is a true story and one of the best and funniest dog books I have ever read. Marley was a purebred Labrador retriever, but a huge, strong, saliva-spewing, tail-whipping, property-destroying, goofy, lovable oaf. Read about how he ran off, pulling his master and mistress' table behind him at an outdoor restaurant because he wanted to get at an ultra-pampered and high class female poodle on the other side. (He almost made it.) Read about how even a steel cage could not contain him and keep him from wreaking havoc in the house during thunderstorms. And read about how he completely captured the hearts of his owners.
