This book grabbed me from the first page and never let go. Stephanie Plum is one sassy, hysterically funny woman! I instantly connected with her. She isn't afraid to say what's on her mind and she'll get the bad guy if it kills her, which it almost does. The other characers are wonderfully three dimensional as well, and the one liner banter between her and Morelli can only make you wonder where it will all lead to.
She's a character you wish you could go out and have a drink with, because you know you'll be laughing all night long!

Really enjoyed this - though I usually like my mysteries less hard-boiled (I'm a dyed in the wool Cozy reader)..but the humor balanced out the (for me) gory, creepy parts.

The first of a number of hilarious, entertaining books by Janet Evanovich. Stephanie Plum is the most interesting character I have come across in a long time. I highly recommend this and all the rest in this series.

My aunt has been trying to get me to read this series for years. I joined PBS and saw these books referenced everywhere. Book 13 in the series came out so I figured, "Wow, must have a huge following." With a build-up like that, I expected to be let down when I finally caved in to read this. And I finished this book in one day. I absolutely loved it! Evanovich has a great way of being descriptive without making the reader's eye glaze over. The characters are so vivid and distinctive. Stephanie is a great lead - flawed, funny and real. Can't wait to read the next installment!

Normally I read suspense and mystery thrillers. I'm not much into light reads but this book literally made me laugh out loud. I would bust out laughing and start a new page and just bust out laughing again still thinking about the previous page. Stephanie is one funny, clumsy, airhead klutz with a funny kooky grandmother and neither should be allowed to hold a gun or drive a car. I had to hurry over to my box of books page and quickly order every single Janet Evanovich book ever wrote.

This book is fun and hilarious. A great read that requires no deep thought or insight. Just a great story about a New Jersey detective and the crime she sets out to solve. It comes with many Jersey stereotypes, which enhances the fun of the book. I highly recommend it.

Let's face it -- life has its moments of dreariness, fatigue and tragedy. This book? Does not. This wonderfully entertaining series will not challenge you or sadden you or "make you think." It will, however, amuse you and uplift you and make you laugh out loud.

This book was so funny I laughed out loud in several places. The ditzy stephanie is a joy to read, but I think my favorite character is her grandmother. The whole dinner table scene had me laughing so hard I almost cried.
This is the first in a series about a Jersey girl out of work who blackmail's her cousin into a job as a bounty hunter. She bungles everything but manages some success through it all with the help of fellow mysterious bad boy bounty hunter Ranger. Her bungling and not-so-smart choices provide great comedy. I couldn't stop laughing. This is not a romance novel.
I had been meaning to start the series a while back and I could kick myself for waiting so long. Now I'm addicted.

My Wife and I have been looking for this one for quite a while. Living in New Jersey and running Friends of the Library Book Sales, we have had no shortage of people looking for the beginning of this series, and recommending the series to us.
I would say this isn't the height of literature. It's gritty, course and quite disturbing in parts (though not too graphic). The comedy is in Stephanie Plum's character. New Jerseyans like the series for its geograpical references and realistic descriptions of life in the state.
It's certainly both an easy read and quite a page-turner.

The characters in this book are funny and real. You can picture each of them in your mind. I laughed so hard at times I had to put the book down and then I couldn't put it down. For all her stumbling you can't help cheering Stephanie Plumb. Sometimes not knowing how to be a bounty hunter may be the best way to get your man.
This book was really good. Very funny:) It was a Mystery/Thriller/Humor mix. Very excellent.
Stephanie Plum finds herself in a bit of bad luck; until she goes and picks up a job with her cousin as a bounty hunter. How hard can it be? She finds out that the first person on her list is Joe Morelli; the boy next door.
As she looks into the capture; she finds herself being drug deeper into a mess she didn't anticipate.
This was diffanitly a fun book and easy read. I liked it and can't wait for the next book of the series.

This was the first mystery book I ever read and I really enjoyed the book. The ending took me by surprised! I can't wait to start the next book from the series. Happy reading!
This book was loaned to me by a co-worker and I am SO grateful that she did!! I used to be an avid reader when I was younger, but getting married, having kids and all that goes with the daily grind of life put that love of reading on the back burner. My co-worker knew I would love this book (and series) and this book is what actually rekindled my love for reading! I couldn't put this book down until it was done. It is definitely a series that you will want to read in order if you intended to read them all, but any one of the books are a good stand alone read.
** WARNING ** You WILL need book two and three handy if you sit down to ready this one! It is such and easy and pleasant read that you will finish it in no time flat and will want to jump right into the next one. I always carried the next copy with me because I never knew when I would finish it or where I would be when I did. I was a schooldbus driver at the time and when you are sitting waiting for the kids to come to the bus or take a school trip, you can't be without the next one!

A good easy read with a tight plot. The first book in the Stephanie Plum series. She gets her first taste of violence, vulnerability, and gun handling as a bounty hunter. Other characters are introduced that will become more intricate as the stories progress.
My Rating: B-
This first novel in the Stephanie Plumb sereis is a quick and easy read. The author is witty (though I didn't find the book to be as laugh out loud funny as I was told to expect). The way the characters interact with each other is easy and doesn't seem forced. The dialogue seems quite natural.
Often throughout the book I found that the dangerous situations that Stephanie got into were magically fixed. They almost always felt set up. Also towards the end of the book I felt that the author simply skimmed over important parts. As if the ending were rushed.
I do recommend this book to those who like something light and easy, just a little something to get your mind away from the everyday.
This is a book to finish in less than an evening and pass on to the next unsuspecting person. It's fluffy, but entirely readable.
A great, fun read in the Stephanie Plum series.

The first Stephanie Plum novel. Great fun.
Loved this book. Can't wait to read the next one. It's about a woman who takes a job as a bounty hunter to make money and ends up with some crazy stuff happening. Lots of excitement going on. This book is a mystery with a little bit of everything going on. Great read!!!
In this book, the first of the Stephanie Plum series, we meet Stephanie Plum, a lady who is looking for a new job since she lost her old job as a lingerie buyer. Unable to find any other job, she ends up in her cousin Vinnie's office. He is a bail bondsman and she becomes a bounty hunter.
She's got no idea how to do the bounty hunting gig but she has no money, loses her new car to repossession and has started to hock all her small appliances to stay afloat. She finds out there is a large reward for Joe Morelli, with whom she has a small history that started in his father's garage and resulted in, many years later, her running him over with her father's Buick. Now he's back in her life as a bail jumper and she's ready to bring him in. Except she's not sure how to do it. In the mean time, she is learning the ropes on small time jumpers and getting tips from Ranger, another bounty hunter. She's also run afoul of the local boxing champ, who turns out to be a crazy psycho who gets his kicks from hurting and degrading women. So, she's chasing Morelli while she has look over her shoulder to make sure the boxer doesn't get her first.
It was a funny read. Some of the humor seemed a bit forced. But there it was still enough to keep me turning the pages and there were a few times I'd laugh out loud and get strange looks from my husband. Stephanie seemed "real" and I could relate to her. I didn't get her connection to Morelli. The chemistry just wasn't happening for me. There were a few times in the book when I was just like "MACE HIM ALREADY!!" But alls well that ends well. She collects her "body money" and solves the crime at the same time. The ending was a not as predictable as I thought it was going to be. On to book 2.
Out of work for months, with her savings gone and her car repossessed, Stephanie Plum is desperate enough to ask her cousin, Vinnie for a job. But the filing job had already been filled, so she decides to try her hand at bounty hunting. How hard can it be?
It turns out to be very difficult. Most of the criminals won't come when asked politely. And she did target Joe Morelli, a cop on the run trying to prove he was framed. Still, that huge paycheck and a shared past keep her focused on Morelli. But when boxer Benito Ramirez starts dogging her trail, she begins to suspect she's in over her head. Can she survive long enough to bring Morelli in?
I've heard a lot about these Stephanie Plum books but have never read one. I'm glad I did. The writing style is engaging and the pace fast. I had a hard time putting the book down and when I did I couldn't stop thinking about. When I finished it, I ordered the second in the series to see what would happen next to the main characters.
I now see why this series is so popular. The characters and storyline make for quick, light reading. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Can't wait to read about all her other exploits. Ms. Janet is a great story teller who sprinkles thrills and comedy throughout to keep the reader entertained. I was thoroughly entertained.
This book was great. It had a lot of humor and a lot of suspensful moments. Had a lot of everything really! Stephanie Plum is hysterical, but at the same time one tough chick! You think she has no idea what she's doing, but totally surprises you with her actions.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Fun little mystery. Nothing life-changing, but a pleasant way to while away a few hours. The main character is a riot and the whole tale strikes just about the right balance between ass-kicking and funny. Thoroughly enjoyable.

The situations that Stephanie Plum finds herself in are too comical. My favorite character has to be Ranger. Janet Evanovich must knows someone like this in real life to be able to portray this character so well.

The Stephie Plum novels are the funniest books I have read in a long time. Just gotta love Grandma Mazur - Stephanie lands a gig at her sleazy cousin Vinnie's bail bonding company. She's got no experience. But that doesn't matter. Neither does the fact that the bail jumper in question is local vice cop Joe Morelli. From the time he first looked up her dress to the time he first got into her pants, to the time Steph hit him with her father's buick, Morelli has spelled TROUBLE. And now that hot guy is in hot water....wanted for murder.
This is a great read! If you like the ABC books by Sue Grafton, you will love this one! The main character is a female bounty hunter!
This book was exciting and humorous. It was a pretty fast read, but also very interesting. I am awaiting the second book and am excited to get into the series.
Excellent! I am so hooked on these books now. Can't wait to dig into the next Stephanie Plum Mystery!
Stephanie Plum is so smart, so honest, and so funny that her narrative charm could drive a documentary on termites. But this tough gal from New Jersey, an unemployed discount lingerie buyer, has a much more interesting story to tell: She has to say that her Miata has been repossessed and that she's so poor at the moment that she just drank her last bottle of beer for breakfast. She has to say that her only chance out of her present rut is her repugnant cousin Vinnie and his bail-bond business. She has to say that she blackmailed Vinnie into giving her a bail-bond recovery job worth $10,000 (for a murder suspect), even though she doesn't own a gun and has never apprehended a person in her life. And she has to say that the guy she has to get, Joe Morelli, is the same creep who charmed away her teenage virginity behind the pastry case in the Trenton bakery where she worked after school. If that hard-luck story doesn't sound compelling enough, Stephanie's several unsuccessful attempts at pulling in Joe make a downright hilarious and suspenseful tale of murder and deceit. Along the way, several more outlandish (but unrelentingly real) characters join the story, including Benito Ramirez, a champion boxer who seems to be following Stephanie Plum wherever she goes.
I loved this book, it's not that typical chick-lit, it was really funny. I suggest it to anyone looking for a good laugh and a little mystery.

This is a fun romp -- an interesting new character in the cozy mystery genre. Stephanie Plum is likeable, human, imperfect and a pleasure to "follow." Just enough peril to keep it interesting, without being a horror show. Pleasant fun, with a satisfying "tease" of more to come.
Very easy reading and very funny!
Very funny, quick read. Can't wait to read more in the series.
Another great Stephanie Plumb book!
Great book! Easy Read. Highly recommend.
First in the series. I REALLY enjoyed this book. I don't think it's possible to read this one and not want to follow Stephanie's adventures even further!
First novels this funny and self-assured come along rarely; dialogue this astute and raunchy is equally unusual. The gutsy heroine introduced here is Stephanie Plum of Trenton, N.J., a recently laid-off lingerie buyer who has no job, no car and no furniture. She does have a hamster, a deranged grandmother, two caring parents and several pairs of biking shorts and sports bras. Finding work with her cousin Vinnie, she becomes a bond hunter and scrounges money enough to buy a gun, a Chevy Nova and some Mace. Her first assignment is to locate a cop accused of murder. Joe Morelli grew up in Stephanie's neighborhood. Possessed of legendary charm, he relieved Stephanie of her virginity when she was 16 (she later ran over him with a car). In her search, Stephanie catches her prey, loses him and grills a psychotic prizefighter, the employer of the man Morelli shot. She steals Morelli's car and then installs an alarm so he can't steal it back. Resourceful and tough, Stephanie has less difficulty finding her man than deciding what she wants to do with him once she's got him. While the link between the fighter and the cop isn't clear until too late in the plot, Evanovich's debut is a delightful romp and Stephanie flaunts a rough-edged appeal.

This is the "ONE" that started the hilarious Stephanie Plum series. If you haven't read them yet, you will be hooked. Stephanie is a Jersey girl who is a jail bond "person", she works with Ranger, the hunk. Other characters are her long time love, Stephanie's outrageous GrandMother and a mix of unusal people. You will love them all.

Evanovich's books are addictive - I've read the whole series and am eagerly awaiting #12 due this month (June, 2006) - this is the first book of the Stephanie Plum series.

The first in the Stephanie Plum series, and it's a real hoot! I'm a Jersey girl (although not from Trenton, or "the burg" as Stephanie calls it), and I think Ms. Evanovich gets the kick butt tone just right (and the humor is dead on, too).

Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. She's a product of the "burg," a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six. Now Stephanie's all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad's, doing her best to sever the world's longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case. Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, fearless bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli is also the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie's virginity at age sixteen and then wrote the details on the bathroom wall of Mario's Sub Shop. There's still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase should be interesting. It could also be extremely dangerous, especially when Stephanie encounters a heavyweight title contender who likes to play rough. Benito Ramirez is known for his brutality to women. At the very least, his obsession with Stephanie complicates her manhunt and brings terror and uncertainty into her life. At worst, it could lead to murder. Witty, fresh, and full of surprises, One for the Money is among the most eagerly awaited crime novels of the season.
This author is funny and I laughed all the way through all 10 of her's.
