Simply put ... HATED IT. All in caps. That's right, I said it! Laurie was trying too hard to be funny. After two chapters, I stopped reading. There was nothing entertaining about this book. And when you start off a book, try not to start it off with a frustrating character. Yucks all around.

Another entry in the girl-who-didn't-quite-fit-in-growing-up chick lit category. Humorous in places, but it often seemed like she trying too hard to be outrageous while going for the laugh.

I swapped for this book because of all the raves reviews, but I just did not find it very entertaining. Almost every story seems to involve being drunk and doing stupid things. I did not get that from reading all of the other reviews and that is not something I generally find funny, so I was quite disappointed. Laurie Notaro is a good writer and I like her style and her non-drinking related essays, but the book was a bit much for me.

Luckily, I got this book free from a friend, but, unfortunately, I can't get back the hours of my life it took to read it. It's a series of columns, which are really rants, by this woman who no one in their right mind would want to be friends with. Her sole goal in life seems to be to get "Stinkin' Drunk," of which she details the 12 levels. I guess if you never experienced your 20's or never had a gross, obnoxious, cynical friend who smoked and hated the "pretty girls," then maybe you'll enjoy this book. Everyone else, steer clear.

The saddest part of this book was that I could see my college self in many of the situations described in these essays. I made many poor choices, as Laurie does, I was never considered the "pretty girl," just like Laurie, and I did many of the same dumb things while drinking that she did. The good news is, I grew up. Thankfully, it takes Laurie a bit longer to do that, which makes for some pretty dang funny reading. Others have dissed the book for being too silly or juvenile...that is its charm. I found this book funny and light, easy to pick up and put down.

Light and funny compilation of short, article length anecdotes. Probably funnier if, like me, you could be a club member.

Many of her adventures are alcohol induced and the stories are from the point of view of a twenty-something, outcast, who lacks direction. It wasn't the funniest book I've read this year, but it was good enough to make me interested in reading her other books.

I didn't like this one as much as her book "I love Everybody and other atrocious Lies". That one made me laugh out loud, this one was mildly funny.

I thought this book was so-so. In some parts, Laurie was funny. In other parts, she was just trying way.too.hard.! The book is a quick read and very light. I was a little bit disappointed. I loved the beginning with the "Stinkin'-Drunk Twelve-Step Program" part, then came to loathe the later chapters.

I didn't like at much as Autobiography of a Fat Bride. It seemed a bit disjointed and didn't flow very well but there were still plenty of sections that made me laugh out loud.

Strangely compelling and surprisingly well written, "true tales" of an "idiot girl"-- misadventures and life disasters that will make you laugh.

This book was "ok" but I didn't love it, that's for sure! It was recommended to me but honestly I got tired of Laurie's escapades which always seem to involve chain smoking and drinking. The book is full of short (supposedly humorous) essays, each just a few pages long but there was nothing to make me want to devour this book. I stopped reading half way through it and just gave up. It wasn't a page turner for me like a good love story or a mystery where you just have to find out what happens. I didn't really care what happened to Laurie. Sorry.

One of the funniest books I have ever read!!!! Loved it. But I have a really warped sense of humor - if you find fart and poop jokes funny, if your family is just a bit touched in the head - you will laugh til you pee your pants!

Seriously warped and funny. Notaro has a way of making the reader feel involved in her (sometimes) far-fetched scenarios. Good for a belly laugh in my opinion.

Several times she had me laughing so hard that I was crying. Then she'd get a quarter of an inch past my gross factor and I'd stop liking her. Sometimes both things happened at the same time. Well worth the time I spent reading her. Good for my health to laugh that hard.

It's not often a book makes me laugh out loud and read parts aloud to my family - this was one of those rare ones. Though small parts are a bit melancholy, most is a riot!! A very quick read. I cannot wait to read more of Notaro's work.

I laughed, snorted, screamed, howled and just generally nearly wet myself reading this collection of stories. This is far beyond a "laugh out loud" book! Most hilarious, especially if, like me, you too could be a member of the Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club.

Very entertaining. I did not want to put the book down and get back to business. I was reading it while waiting for the curtain at the theatre's sound booth and was completely caught up. "What do you mean 'go?' OH - start the show???" ahem.

Hilarious. If you like Jen Lancaster's stuff (Bitter is the New Black), you'll probably appreciate Laurie Notaro. She made me laugh out loud any number of times, and that's saying something.

I must say, this book did not impress me. I chose it based on recommendations from other PBS'ers and it was not what I expected. It reads like a stand up comedy routine with each chapter being a new bit. It did not keep my attention. This is not to say Ms. Notaro is not a good writer, this book is just not a smooth novell like read. If you are looking for some comic, very light reading - this may be the book for you.

There were some very funny columns in this. There were also, unfortunately, way too many pieces whose basic theme was "I went out and got drunk and threw up". But once I got past those, I really enjoyed the rest. Her funniest columns deal with her interactions with her mother and grandmother.

This book of essays was certainly laugh-out-loud funny in some places, although, overall, she is a bit crass and gross. She's no Sedaris, but she is still funny in her own way. I bought her second book of essays and will continue to keep an eye out for her.

Laurie Notaro is one of the funniest authors I have ever read. I laughed until I cried! She is so funny because she is so easy to relate to. You'll find yourself saying, over & over again, "I have been there & I have certainly done that!"

Heidi A. reviewed on 11/10/2007...

Her novel is better than this book. It has some very funny moments, however, most of the time you just feel sorry that her life was so empty of any content! I kept reading hoping it would get better...it didn't! I would pass on this one.

Marilynn L. (WildOrchid) reviewed on 10/29/2007...

Funny, funny, funny! If you can remember getting "the talk" from the school nurse or the female gym teacher, you should find the chapter entitled "Suckers" hysterical. I laughed so hard I couldn't see through the tears. I love her quirkyness and somehow, can relate to a lot of the tales that she tells. I'm not sure if this is a good thing. :-)

Really great book, Laurie's humor is so great. I read this book in 3 night's. Couldn't put it down, quick easy hilarous read... It's definetely a girl's book... A not really a young girl's book, I'd say 20's... Just cause of some of the material.. I'm 23 and loved it, you have to be our age to get some of the stuff the lead character goes thru....

This is an excellent book! It's not philosophical, moving or anything like that. It's just a good, quick, funny read. It took me back to highschool and college in the worst way! I seriously enjoyed this. It only took a few days to read it and many times I laughed out loud, not just any laugh, a BELLY LAUGH! I almost wanted to keep it on my shelf but I figured if I wanted to I could get a hold of it again. I will let someone get a kick out of it like I did. ENJOY!
