Book Reviews of Asking for Trouble

This book was pretty good. I was expecting it to be more like the movie The Wedding Date but as it is said in a lot of the other reviews it is really different from the movie. It is a funny and enjoyable book.

Well, it was very different from the movie it inspired. I was prepared for that and I still didn't like it very much all told. I didn't care for Sophy because she seemed to have some kind of personality flaw. Obviously she was very concerned with making her mother happy and keeping up appearances, but then the outbursts and thoughts she had seem to contradict that. It just didn't work for me. The dialogue was a bit unnatural to me at times as well. (I find myself saying that rather often about British books, however, so take it with a grain of salt.) Honestly, I didn't really like the interactions between her and Josh very much. She was neurotic about her looks and practically delusional about how Josh viewed her. Was it the worst book I've ever read? Nope, not even close. It was enjoyable enough for me to finish it and give it 3 out of 5 stars. This is one time, however, where I actually enjoyed the movie more than the book. For me, they took the best parts of the book and created the movie around that and really made it work. Of course, your mileage may vary. :)

I loved this book. The movie that was based on it was nothing like the book. The book was even funnier and I liked the ending more. I highly recommend reading this book.

This was the second time I read this book: the first time was when it was (evidently a reissue for a movie tie-in) published as "The Wedding Date", which starred Debra Messing and the ever delectable Dermot Mulroney. I think the book is better than the movie, but isn't that usually the case? (Except for Dermot, of course!) Anyhow, I re-read it even though I realized I'd already done so in the past, and it still made me laugh and roll my eyes and "tsk" at some of the idiocy. Nothing like a few twit characters that make you feel superior! And so, I obviously enjoyed it. A good read, nothing madly thought-provoking, just a pleasant, screwball romance.

A British literary version of The Wedding Date (movie)... I loved this book.

Well now we know how "Open mouth, Insert foot" works out, or at least you will know once you read this humorus account of one women's tale of doing just that. A delightful and quick read.

funny book...it's a comedy of errors for the main character, Sophy...I recommend it if you're a fan of chick lit -Mirah W.

Interesting book. If you're mad about the movie (The Wedding Date), you may want to skip this one as it is VERY different. But, it was an amusing read.

Along the lines of Bridget Jones' Diary. A fun, fast-paced frolic!

Unmarried 30 year old Sophy Metcalfe told a little white lie to soothe her nagging mother. The lies name was dominic the ideal boyfriend.She has to go to her sisters wedding and Dominic is needed to be seen in the flesh. he unfortunately is not real. So she hires a man to pretend to be Dominic.... And the story begins

I did not like this book. It is about dating in England.

Great "romance" type book for the 30-something crowd, especially if you are an Anglophile.

OMG, this book was HYSTERICAL! I read it long before anyone heard of Wedding Date and as soon as I saw the trailer, I knew it was based on this book. I read it a 2nd time before seeing the movie and was sucked in just as easily the 2nd time around. One of the best chick lits out there, and Liz should get her due along with Green and Kinsella, et al!

I enjoyed this book for the most part, but the author has a tendency to use the same idioms over and over, which gets irritating after a while.

Funny story once you get used to reading the British jargon.

This book was funny and shows how one lie can lead to another. This was a relaxing, and quick read.

It was okay. Sophy the main character was over played a bit, or maybe I can only stand a character referring to herself as a 'fat cow' or her 'wobbly bit' so many times before I start to her as a whiner. Josh, the main male character, was unremarkable. While this book was based off the movie "The Wedding Date" the two were quit different, especially because the movie was rather charming.
But if you are looking for a quick read, with colorful British slang, this would be a good choice. If you also liked The Diary of Bridget Jones, this book was along the similar lines.

I guess I didn't read enough of the review to catch that this book takes place in England. It was funny, I just prefer American characters, especially southern women.
