I think it's supposed to be funny, but I started out not liking this book at all. First, I prefer my fiction to be in the 3rd person, past tense. This is both present tense and first person, which made the bad treatment she was getting more personal. Her job, for instance, expecting long hours, without even weekends off. And there's her workaholic mother and brother, who are supposed to meet her for her birthday dinner, and both of them stand her up. Her brother's secretary delivers her present: soap. She's sitting there, alone, being sung to by waiters, her family represented by two cell phones. The waiter leaves the drinks beside the phones. Funny, but pathetic. Then there's a disaster at work, and she loses it and runs. I was halfway through the book before I started to enjoy it.

I just finished this book, and I really enjoyed it more than her other books. The main character was easy to relate to and she just does some funny things. There were several points in the book where I was laughing out loud and my husband asked me what was so funny. The plot is somewhat predictable, as I figured it out about halfway through the book, but I still wanted to keep reading to figure out how the character would handle it. It kept me entertained.

Very easy read, so this was perfect for me right now. I have to say I admire the main character. I sometimes wanna just chuck it all and go hide somewhere - mistake or no mistake! This would be a great beach read or something you need to read when you don't want to have to pay rapt attention to it. Worth a read, but nothing too deep :)

I was looking for some fluff, something with a sense of humor. This wasn't it. The book blurb makes it sound like fun. The cutesy-cover makes it look like fun. The tone of the writing make it sound like fun. I found no fun.

I listened to 75 minutes of the 6.5 hour CD version of the book; during that time I didn't find a character that I was remotely interested in, nor did I ever crack a smile (even an inward one). Seriously, if you're supposed to be clever, funny, or even mildly witty, don't you think you ought to put some of that stuff in the first 20% of the book?

I'm sure someone out there thinks this writer's stuff is hilarious. Wow, I SO did not. ::yawn::

Sohie Kinsella has done it again with a totally clueless herione. I love her books and can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I recommend this book for summer vacation reading.

I am not a fan of Sophie Kinsella's books due to the way she writes her female characters. They always find themselves in difficult situations due to misunderstandings that would be easily cleared up if they simply spoke up and said what they meant to say; of course, if they did this, her books would be about 5 pages long, since the entire premise of her books rides on misunderstandings. Her female characters are always needing a man to rescue them from the mess they find themselves in; not a fan.

Another fun Kinsella book. This one moved a little slow at the beginning, but in the end it was just as fun as the Shopaholic series.

If you enjoy British Chick Lit (Jemina J & Bridget Jones), then you will enjoy this quick, light story about an over-the-top workaholic attorney who hits rock bottom in her career and finds a new one as a housekeeper. A little farcical, but I enjoyed it.

It was refreshing to read a SK book about a woman with an actual head on her shoulders. There was more gratuitous language than I like in a Chick Lit book, but overall it was a fun and quick read.

Not quite up to the snuff of the famous "Shopaholic" series, The Undomestic Goddess still brings good laughs and fun to the table. It was an enjoyable read but I still think I prefer Can You Keep a Secret or the Shopaholic series to this novel.

Sophie Kinsella is at her best. You'll cheer for the heroine Samantha as she makes her transition from workaholic corporate lawyer to a housekeeper who learns that ironing might be more difficult than being a high-powered attorney. Complete with a tangled love story!

British chick-lit, light and airy, but hilarious. Story of a career woman who has no domestic skills to speak of winding up as a housekeeper outside of London. Kinsella is never incredibly deep, but her characters always amuse.

I absolutely loved this book. Ok, a lot of it is unrealistic, but it's a great SUMMER BEACH, mindless read. I can SO see Kate Hudson and Matthew McConneghey in these roles..or even Linday Lohan...just too cute...I can't wait until it's a movie!

I loved this book. I like the Shopaholic series but this book is better! I can only imagine trying to be Samantha!!

Jennifer D. (mpontalba) reviewed on 7/9/2009...

Samantha has been groomed to be a high powered London lawyer since childhood. She has the reputation of perfection, but when she makes one mistake (admittedly, a $50 million mistake), she runs away from all that and takes an anonymous job as a housekeeper in the Cotswolds. Besides learning how to do the laundry, she also learns that life is meant to take time...and so does love.

Ronald M. (Fasturtle) reviewed on 5/6/2009...

This is my second book by Sophie Kinsella and I absolutely loved it! I flew through it and really never wanted to put it down. Rarely does this happen to me, so I was really pleased! The heroine is a great gal who gets herself into a bit of a mess. I absolutely love the leading man and rooted for them to get together from the beginning. If you love chick lit, you'll love this book!

I want a sequel!

Kasa W. reviewed on 12/15/2008...

This was a real surprise. It is literally laugh out loud funny and has a really good twist to the storyline. Its a mystery wrapped up in a comedy. The premise, without giving to much away, is that a city woman, who typically has all her household duties done for her, is thrust into of a housekeeper/cook role (in disguise of course.) And while she is desperately trying to figure out what exactly 'dusting' (and many other chores) entail, she's also trying to figure out what exactly caused the calamity she left behind.

Lauren H. (lilguppy) reviewed on 12/13/2008...

Another bit of the great writing style of Kinsella. Samantha is a young, high-powered lawyer with one of the top law firms in England. About to make partner, she realizes she has made a horrendous mistake, one that costs her what she has sacrificed a social life and worked endless hours to achieve. Humiliated and lost, she walks out of her London office and wanders onto a train that takes her to middle of nowhere. Looking for the hospitality of a stranger, she walks up to the door of a beautiful estate and is mistaken for a applicant to a housekeeping position. As a whirlwind ensues, she finds herself hired and at a loss at how to do anything domestic. That's when she finds the kindness of strangers, potential love and a world unlike she'd known and they have no idea who she really is. Well done book. A quick read you just can't put down.

Miranda M. (mirandamo) reviewed on 12/5/2008...

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK!! A city girl who works way to much realizes she has just made the biggest work mistake of her life and could loose her job. She panics and gets on a train with nothing but her purse and Blackberry and literally leaves everything behind. She finds a job pretending to be somebody she's not and has no clue what she is doing! But along the way she finds out that there is more to life than work and she discovers what is truly important.

I laughed the whole time!! And when I wasn't laughing I couldn't stop smiling! This was my first book by Sophie Kinsella and it is definitely not my last. She grabbed my attention at the very beginning and had it until the very end! Easy to read. And I loved the British lingo!!

Workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting has just done the unthinkable. She’s made a mistake so huge, it’ll wreck any chance of a partnership.

Going into utter meltdown, she walks out of her London office, gets on a train, and ends up in the middle of nowhere. Asking for directions at a big, beautiful house, she’s mistaken for an interviewee and finds herself being offered a job as housekeeper. Her employers have no idea they’ve hired a lawyer–and Samantha has no idea how to work the oven. She can’t sew on a button, bake a potato, or get the #@%# ironing board to open. How she takes a deep breath and begins to cope–and finds love–is a story as delicious as the bread she learns to bake.

But will her old life ever catch up with her? And if it does…will she want it back?

This a former library book, front & back cover slightly bent.
