I believe this is Harris' first published mystery; it was originally published in 1981 and re-released in 2007. It's a very light, fun read. You can see elements of Aurora, Sookie, and Lily in the main character.

Absolutely devoured this in an afternoon! Being from the South, I understood all the nuances of small-town Southern living. I was thrown for a bit by how dated some of the attitudes really were in the story until I looked at the copyright date and realized it was written over 25 years ago (I think this may be Ms. Harris' first book?)

Now I know I will be hunting her series novels!

Harris's first novel about a young woman who believes her parents death was not a simple car accident. As events continue to unfurl in her small Mississippi town she tries to piece together the connection between a current murder and her parent's deaths.

Not much plot. It was hard to get involved with the characters.

Catherine Linton returns to her hometown determined to discover who tampered with her parent’s car causing their fatal accident. Shortly after she arrives, she finds a dead body in a shed on her property. Soon after, she discovers another dead body this time, the tenant renting a house she owns. The murderer has to be someone she knows and knows well. Someone she grew up knowing and trusting because this is a very small town. The ending is a surprise. I found this to be a very different kind of book by paranormal and mystery writer Charlaine Harris. I think it was probably her first novel. It is well worth the read if you enjoy any of her other books.

This was a pretty good read. Not heavy on the romance, no sex, but enjoyable.

This starts out slow but is actually a good mystery novel. Get past the 1st chapter and you'll enjoy it!

Surprising twist at the end. This wasn't my favorite of Charlaine Harris novels, but I really wanted to go back and read her very first book. It was a fast read and enjoyable.

Catherine Linton's parents were killed in a car crash but Catherine Linton is suspicious and so she returns to her hometown of Lowfield, Mississippi where she takes a job on the local paper. Her father was the local doctor and when his nurse turns up murdered, she is sure that it's connected with the death of her parents though no one believes here. Lowfield is like many small towns in the South, on the surface it seems like a nice place to live, under the surface there are secrets and Catherine is convinced that someone's secret is getting people killed. Charlaine Harris does a great job with this book, it has suspects but when the real killer is revealed it's a shocker. This is a book that's easy to sit down with and not want to set it down until you're finished, fortunately at 290 and a quarter pages, that's not a problem.

Catherine Litton has returned to her hometown od Lowfield Mississipi, unconvinced that the death of her parents in a car crash six monts earlier were an accident. And her suspicions were caonfirmed when she stumbles upon the dead and beaten body of her Doctor-fathers longtime nurse. There are secrets being kept in Lowfield, and the town where Catherine grew up may be the same place where she is sent to her grave.
