If you've never read Connelly or if you've read Connelly, but not one of his Bosch books, this is a great one to start with. It sets the stage for many of his later books. When I read the back of one of Connelly's Bosch books, I never thought I would be interested, but a friend lent me a copy so I gave it a try. NOW I AM HOOKED! I think I've now read every book Connelly has ever written.

A good book on its own, but a real treat for anyone who has followed the Connelly characters of Harry Bosch, Rachel Walling, and Terry McCaleb as they all come together in this novel. Suspenseful and fast paced.

I would recommend reading both The Poet and Blood Work before reading this book.

(One fun tidbit: Connelly wrote the book Blood Work which was subsequently made into a Clint Eastwood movie. Then in this book, one of Connelly's fictional characters refers back to the movie complaining about how he was portrayed and discussing the royalty he received for the use of his likeness. Loony. )

4 stars out of 5

In this one, he pulls in Terry McCaleb (Blood Work) and Rachel (the FBI agent who shot the Poet) and The Poet (Backus-agent turned serial killer) and of course, Mr. Harry Bosch. I love everything by Connelly. This is another great one. (10th of the Bosch series)

Solid, fast paced story - brings three of Connelly's characters together. I got so engrossed with the story that I couldn't put it down for more than a few minutes. He has such a compelling story-telling style that grips you immediately and doesn't let go. You just can't wait to see what happens next.

Turgid thriller with all the pacing excitement of a snail race. Part of the Harry Bosch series, this time dealing with Bosch investigating the death of a retired FBI agent which appears to be tied to the reappearance of a serial-killer rogue agent.

The Narrows Michael Connelly This was a good follow up Novel to “The Poet”. The poet is back after eight years and he is killing again. Harry Bosch's friend dies a mysterious death and his wife has asked him to check into it. Harry must unravel the clues and with the help of Rachel Walling, the FBI agent, they must stop The Poet from striking again. This was a good book, it kept my interest throughout, it was a non-stop energy ride with plenty of twists and turns. The ending however was not worthy of this book or the book “The Poet”. If the ending would have been better this book would have been a 5/5. Instead, it ended as somewhat of a dud. Grade 3/5

I have not read this, but my husband really liked it. It is sort of a sequel to "The Poet," but you do not have to read that one first in order to enjoy this book.

Leah G. reviewed on 3/6/2007...

I absolutely loved this book! It is a great police thriller--however, it is somewhat violent. There are also some mild adult scenes and a great deal of bad language, so be warned. The author has a wonderful, "deep" style, is very observant of human nature, and goes beyond a simple exciting plot. To be honest, I hesitate to list this, because I'm sure I'll read it again at some point!

Book Description
FBI agent Rachel Walling finally gets the call she's dreaded for years. The Poet has returned.Years earlier she worked on the famous case tracking the serial killer who wove lines of poetry into his hideous crimes. Rachel has never forgotten the Poet-and apparently he has not forgotten her. Former LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call, too, from an old friend whose husband recently died. The death appeared natural, but this man's ties to the hunt for the Poet make Harry dig deep. What he finds leads him into the most terrifying situation he has ever encountered. So begins the most deeply compelling, frightening, and masterful novel Michael Connelly has ever written, placing Harry Bosch squarely in the path of the most ruthless and ingenious murderer in Los Angeles's history. This spectacularly dramatic and shocking novel will have Michael Connelly's readers desperately hungry for the next book from 'one of America's best writers' (Cleveland Plain Dealer).

Terry McCaleb is dead. The official verdict is that his transplanted heart failed. His wife contacts Harry Bosch because she thinks someone switched his medication. While investigating Harry runs into a serial killer and the FBI who don't want him around. Book stands alone but it is more meaningful if you read The Poet and Blood Work first. Very good book.

From Publishers Weekly
Those who are familiar with the audio adaptations of Connelly's books will be delighted to see that Cariou lends his talents to Connelly's latest mystery, which is a sequel to The Poet (1996). At the center of this engrossing thriller is world-weary, retired L.A. homicide detective Harry Bosch. While investigating the death of ex-FBI profiler Terry McCalab, Bosch begins to suspect that the notorious serial killer The Poet, presumed dead, may be the culprit. As he digs deeper, Bosch meets and eventually joins forces with FBI agent Rachel Walling, who went up against The Poet the first time around. The novel's point of view cuts from Bosch's first-person commentary to the third-person perspectives of Walling and The Poet. Cariou handles these changes with professional ease. He gives Bosch a rough voice, raspy with experience, and provides Walling with a younger, but no less tough, intonation. Cariou's vocal dexterity becomes truly apparent, however, when he reads Connelly's descriptive passages. Whether he is illuminating a grisly crime scene, a rainstorm pummeling a Los Angeles freeway or a soft moment between Bosch and his young daughter, Cariou perfectly captures the subtleties of Connelly's tightly written prose.

His old partner dies and the widow thinks it was not an accident. During his investigation, Rachel and Harry have to work together and through issues from their past to catch the Poet.

Most recent in the "Harry Bosch" detective novels. Is the sequel to "The Poet" and also involves Terry McCaleb (from "Bloodwork") in the plot.

Lisa G. (wndrngrl) - Centre, AL reviewed on 4/24/2005...

Mr.Connelly is at the height of his powers in this novel. Harry Bosch is one of those rare charcters who gets more interesting the longer Mr.Connelly writes about him. This novel ties together many plot points from previous novels as Harry matches wits with the poet, the serial killer from the novel "The Poet" The tension in this novels builds to a explosive climax that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If your interested in the best writing in crime fiction you can't do any better than Michael Connelly.

Now the two are at odds with the FBI...squarely in the path of the Poet, who will lead them on a wicked ride out of the heat, through the narrows of evil and into his darkness. A great page turner.
