Absolutely great story. While the "whodunit" part was easy to figure out, the rest of the story more than makes up for it. The plot was strong and the range of emotions that the characters go through was very realistic.

While this book is not my favorite of all Nicholas's books, it certainly stops at nothing to surprise and captivate the reader. It was a shocking tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat(or perhaps your recliner??). Like all of Nicholas's books though, its a real page-turner and you won't be able to put it down. Excellent.

As sheriff of New Bern, North Caroline, he is torn between bringing the unknown driver to justice and worry for his young son, Jonah. When Miles meets Jonah's teacher, who is recoving from a difficult divorce, they tentatively reach out to each other in friendship, but it soon turns to love. Can their love mend their broken hearts and is that love strong enought to survive a shocking secret? Excellent book!

Another good book from Nicholas Sparks. Of course it's a tale of love with a twist, and the twist is one we don't find out about until nearly the end. I'd have liked to seen him go on a further with the hero and heroine at the end of the book, but I guess that is what my imagination is for.

Miles Ryan's life seemed to end the day his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident two years ago. Missy had been his first love, and Miles fervently believes she will be his last. As a deputy sheriff in the North Carolina town of New Bern, Miles Ryan not only grieves for Missy, but longs to bring the unknown driver to justice.
Then Miles meets Sarah Andrews. The second grade teacher of his son, Jonah, Sarah had left Baltimore after a difficult divorce to start over in the gentler surroundings of New Bern. Perhaps it is her own emotional wounds that make her sensitive to the hurt she first sees in Jonah's eyes, and then his father's. Tentatively, Sarah and Miles reach out to each other. Soon they are both laughing for the first time in years...and falling in love.
Neither will be able to guess how closely linked they are to a shocking secret-one that will force them to question everything they ever believed in...and make a heartbreaking choice that will change their lives forever.

Sweet, accessible, uplifting and predictable, the latest love story from Sparks (The Notebook) leaves the reader with just one burning question: Why is this consummate beach book being published in the fall? The nearly thwarted but eventually triumphant romance of deputy sheriff Miles Ryan and second-grade teacher Sarah Andrews goes down as easily as marshmallow fluff and offers about as much real nourishment. Miles's high school sweetheart, Missy, was killed in an unsolved hit and run accident, leaving him to raise their son, Jonah, in New Bern, N.C. Sarah's politically ambitious husband, Michael, dumped her when her ovaries proved inactive, and she fled to New Bern to teach, and love, other people's kids. Miles and Sarah meet at a parent-teacher conference, and the sparks fly. But there's a fly in the ointment as well; an italicized voice threaded among the happy chapters alerts us that Missy's death was caused by someone whose identity, if revealed, could destroy Miles and Sarah's newfound joy. In Sparks's heaven, clouds exist to make silver linings look the brighter. As tough truth shadows their landscape, Miles and Sarah find depths within themselves, and their rekindled light illumines all. New Bern becomes a city of the reborn. Charlie Curtis, Miles's stickler boss, learns to bend; Missy's aimless killer morphs into a healer; and Jonah once again knows a mother's love. The opposite of edgy, with simple sentences and soft-pedaled sex, Sparks's plain vanilla morality will doubtless sell like ice cream on a steamy day.
