What can I say about this book that has not already been said? It is a classic, plain and simple. Tolkien is the father of the modern fantasy tale.

I own three copies of this book - way more than I need, but I just couldn't help myself! Anyone that was a true fan of the movie trilogy (or before that - a true geek) will love these books. I had never heard of them until I saw the movie, and then I had to have all three plus the Hobbit. I have to say that the Hobbit is by far the most fun to read, but a true word-lover will enjoy all of Tolkien's work. My advice: Try it out! If you just can't get through it then put it back on PBS, but you'll never know until you try!

Much more to the book than what is in the film! I loved its riches!

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Crack of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

The first volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure.

An excellent book. It was difficult the first time I tried to read it, but after going back and reading the Hobbit everything made more sense.
