When I initially began reading this book, I was disappointed because I had hoped the author would spend more time recounting his experiences in heaven. (Only a couple of pages are devoted to his description of dying.) I found the middle of the book to be quite boring, and I took a long time to read it and almost didn't finish it for this reason. However, the book really picked up at the end. Don's stories about his recovery, though painful and depressing, were effective at reminding me of all of the things that I tend to take for granted in my daily life. I also really enjoyed reading about how Don turned other people's lives around by sharing his experiences and insights. I recommend this book to anyone who has recently lost a loved one, or who is in the process of recovering from serious injuries. However, I don't recommend this book to someone who is closeminded in the sense that they might become offended by the Christian religious perpective. In some ways, this book reminded me of "Tuesdays With Morrie." If you enjoyed reading "Tuesdays With Morrie," you will probably enjoy this book as well.

Wow. This book recounts what happened to Don Piper while he was "dead" for 90 minutes after grave injury in an auto accident. He vividly recalls, in detail, what he experienced during the hour-and-a-half rescuers worked to resuscitate him. His is truly a glimpse of heaven, told with an incredible eye for detail.

Although Dan Piper's heaven experience is beautifully related to the readers in detail, most of the book is to relate his experiences for rehab and how his faith brought him the experiences yet to come. There is a lot written on his depression during rehab, but it all makes sense why that part of his recovery was indeed part of his recovery. It makes sense when you complete the entire book. It can be inspirational to someone or just really bring faith in God back to someone who needs it most now.

This is probably one of my all time favorite books. It is essentially a beautiful biographical telling of one man's faith and his miraculous return from heaven after he was pronounced dead at the scene of a horrible car accident. I believe this is a must read for all Christians.

The book was an interesting story of one man's experience with heaven, but I really wish it spent more time on that subject. The majority of the book chronicled his recovery process, and I think he did a great job of describing his emotions during the painful processes. I can see how this book would be a great spiritual confirmation or even a story of hope for others, but . . . let's just put it this way: I don't recommend this book for anyone who is a skeptic or cynic when it comes to religion.

My mother read this book and really was upset with it. She said most of the book dealt with his recovery which is what she hoped it was not about. She wanted to hear more about his "90 minutes in heaven", but that only lasted for a chapter or so. I personally haven't read it myself, I just am repeating what my mother said.

Don Piper died on January 18, 1989 while on his way home from a church conference. Although he does go in depth into his visit to Heaven, his book really concentrates on his life after the accident. After experiencing a joyous reunion with deceased relatives he was whisked away to earth with no explanation. Don is a devout Christian and suffers greatly from his banishment in heaven and with the physical pain and recovery from his automobile accident. This is really a story of survival against all odds and it is extremely motivating. When we hear of such adversity striking others we often wonder how they find the grit to survive. By reading Don's story we find that survival is based on a mixture of hope, faith and sheer determination. Read this book, you won't be disappointed

Easy read and well written. I liked his description of heaven the best. What follows is a journey that I would not wish on anyone. It reminded me that God allows His people to experience pain and all kinds of human weaknesses. Yet, He goes through it with us and provides for us.

True story of a man in the wrong place at the wrong time, his account of Heaven while he was dead for 90 minutes, and the long, long road to his recovery.
Very detail description of Rev. Don Piper's ordeal with life, death, Heaven, and the very long road to recovery. Got a bit boring in parts, but overall a good book.

This is an interesting read... I know of many people that have read it and felt utterly amazed, and "converted". Is it odd that I see nothing out of the normal in this book? It's an account of something that I believe to happen on a regular basis. And somehow doesn't seem so out of the ordinary. It's a fast read. I often wonder if anyone is convinced from utter disbelief to otherwise... I'll have to take a peak at the other reviews!

This was a one sitting read book for me. It was a definite eye-opener to a couple of major things we take for granted. You should not question things that happen to you in life because God always has a plan for you. You may not understand things at the time of events and you must trust in God as His servant. The pastor that came upon the wreckage of the accident that prayed over Don's lifeless body, had to let the faith of God lead him to what He had instructed. Don lived so that he might help other people both in his ministry and just by helping other accident victims with their recovery. Our lives can change in the blink of an eye. Embrace your life and your family and live each day to the fullest...with God all things are possible.

If you've ever been concerned about the existence of Heaven, or if you just want to read an incredible story of recovery, this book is great. Although I'm a Christian, I've always felt scared of death---I'm young, people in my family die young, etc. But after reading Don Piper's description of Heaven, I feel a great deal of relief. His story is amazing in other ways, too---his struggles in healing his body and his heart, the impact he's had on others. It's a wonderful book!

On the way home from a conference, Don Piper's car was crushed by a semi that crossed into his lane. Medical personnel said he died instantly. While his body lay lifeless inside the ruins of his car, Piper experienced the glories of heaven, awed by its beauty and music.
Ninety minutes after the wreck, while a minister prayed for him, Piper miraculously returned to life on earth with only the memory of inexpressible heavenly bliss. His faith in God was severely tested as he faced an uncertain and grueling recovery. Now he shares his life-changing story.

Don's experiences in heaven were a very small portion of the book. While I appreciate the fact that he recounted the negative attitude he had during his recovery, and the way he turned it around to be a positive experience, there was entirely too much time spent describing his injuries, rehab and description of the medical procedures. This book did not turn out to be what I had hoped it would be.

At first it seems like too much information to go through the author's accident, but then when you read the rest of the book, it makes sense! I couldn't agree with Nichole S. more. I was a bit disapointed there was so very little time spent about the "90 Minutes in Heaven" experience and the bulk of the book was about the painful recovery Don faced in the aftermath of his accident but towards the end it really all came together. I would recommend this book and did get some very meaningful take-aways from it.

The concept of the book is unique. However, I was rather disappointed with how the book played out and the short description of his heavenly experience. There were parts near the end which were uplifting and inspiring.
Strictly based on the structure of the book, I found it quite repetitive. I finished the book wanting and expecting more.
However, I DID pass this book along to a friend who's mother-in-law had recently passed. Although the book wasn't amazingly entertaining or overwhelmingly moving, the picture in which Don Piper paints his first heavenly encounter was beautiful and peaceful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a loved one or is dealing with personal loss. It can put ones mind at ease knowing their loved ones are truly in God's care!

This book isn't actually about Don's 90 Minutes in Heaven, and in fact little time is spent describing his time there. As I read, I grieved wondering WHY God sent him back. By the end I was praising and knew why he was sent back--he has led many to Christ in this time and who knows how many of those have led others? He has an incredibly inspiring and honest story to share and I recommend it for all believers. i now know that all of my believing loved ones who've gone on went straight to Christ!

Don was a average Christian man, coming home from a convention when his small car was crushed by a 18 wheeler.
The EMT's checked for pulse and life signs and found none.
Along comes another minister, who insisted to pray for this dead man.
The ministers prays, and led by the Spirit of God, speaks life into the dead body...he starts singing "What a friend we have in Jesus", and the corpse comes to life singing also.
The EMT's are harder to convince but they eventually come at the minister's prodding and all hell breaks loose. The dead man is back to life.
The rest of the tale is Don's experiance with experimantal bone growing devices and the intense pain and depression that he had.
A very real and honest account of a Christian struggling in day to day lie with cronic pain.

It was a very good book. His story of survival is amazing, and the story of his recovery is heart wrenching. His description of heaven is beautiful, although I found it a bit too close to the cliche. I have no doubt that he believes his experience, but the fact that his description is exactly what a Baptist preacher would envision makes me think this is some type of dream or vision rather than a true trip to heaven. The book is also a bit too preachy to be inspirational for me.

I thought this was a good book, but it was more focused on the recovery than his 90 minutes in heaven. There are one or two chapters that discuss this experience, but his recovery is very painful and somewhat discouraging for the majority of the story. If you are expecting an ethereal heaven experience, just read the first chapter. I appreciated that he didn't sugar coat his experience- he was discouraged and depressed and he admits this fact. The end of the book made it a worthwile read and I did like the book, but it wasn't quite what I expected.

A pastor I once knew had preached about Don Pipers story and had on several occasions recommended this book to me. I have ever since then wanted to read Don Pipers story.
Today while rummaging through some old books at a sale I reached out and picked this book from all the others. I was ecstatic. I went home and began reading it even before the book I had just received in the mail from paperback. The real message in this book for me is the power of prayer! Dons story was so riveting but for me the real miracles of this story are in the answers to prayers. While his recounting the recovery was a good idea for those who have had this kind of horrific experience they did not much for me. I did find it interesting but not overly interesting. I agree with other reviews that in some parts of the book in the middle it is a little dry and boring for the average reader but I expect it is not for someone who has endured similiar pain and suffering.
Prayer....its real....so is heaven. Im glad we have them both. I rate this book a 3 for its story content and outreach. It could have been a 5 if written differently with more emotion and heart tugging sentiment...just the thing most guys hate but woman love.

Excellent book. While some reviews I've read have criticized that little time in the book is devoted to the author's description of heaven, the most important and encouraging facet of the book to me was the evidence of the power of prayer. When you think things are hopeless, powerful and faithful prayer can change things. I'm encouraged about the author's description of heaven, but even more so that when it seemed all hope was gone, one man’s faithful prayer moved God to act in a dying/dead man’s favor. And when we can't pray for ourselves, the prayers of the righteous in our behalf are powerful and effective.
I did find the book to be repetitive at times on some points, but sometimes this was helpful in reinforcing some information that I had glossed over or not fully understood the first time. Overall, I found Piper’s story inspiring and faith building – not so much on the point that heaven exists and that it is a wonderful place, but that God is faithful and hears my prayers in the here and now.

I honestly couldn't get through the book. It's an interesting read if you believe that someone can actually experience heaven like that, but I just felt like it was made up. I'm sure several things were actually true, but it just seemed like a bunch of nonsense to me.

Absolutely amazing. Even in "near death" or "return to life" stories you don't imagine a man being dead 90 minutes and returning to this earth. Truly a story of a miracle, and a man whose has things yet to do before returning to heaven.

I didn't like this at all - he said he wanted to start a church and what better way than to write a "spectacular" story - well, there's nothing new here except a sad story about a family that endured a horrible tragedy. This proves only the power of prayer. Thankfully, he had lots of it - and that's how it should have been marketed - as far as the heaven part - Sorry - I don't believe him

This is a very uplifting book, especially if you are still processing the loss of a loved one or contemplating your own departure from this world and into the next. In it we see that many people who those with a very strict Christian faith would have never expected to see in Heaven, may well be there indeed. I often wondered about my grandfather who for most of his life was an agnostic, and who never outwardly accepted Christ. However, he did say one prayer that I heard when my grandmother was nearing her passage. After reading this book I am sure that he was indeed acceptable and pleasing, and he is with the Master.

As he is driving home from a minister's conference, Baptist minister Don Piper collides with a semi-truck that crosses into his lane. He is pronounced dead at the scene. For the next 90 minutes, Piper experiences heaven where he is greeted by those who had influenced him spiritually. He hears beautiful music and feels true peace.
Back on earth, a passing minister who had also been at the conference is led to pray for Don even though he knows the man is dead. Piper miraculously comes back to life and the bliss of heaven is replaced by a long and painful recovery.

This book was amazing, it mad me feel better about life after death. I knew that there was no doubt that my mother went to Heaven when she passed away, she was a very Spiritual women. I understand why she called on Jesus so much, I know that she wasn't wearied about her after life. I didn't know at the time I had finished this book but some days after my brother and I were talking about death and just out of the blue I said that I'm not scared of dieing, my brother said he was and that he didn't want to die. I told him that I didn't want to die either, I just wasn't scared of the thought of dieing. I was some what surprised at what I said but then thought of the book I had read and realized that was why I was not scared. The thought of death use to scare me but not after reading this book. Don't misunderstand me I'm not ready for death I love life and thank God for letting me see another beautiful day, I'm just at peace about that subject. ( If I had to rate this book between 1-10 I would give it a 10 )
I read this book to my family out loud over the course of a couple weeks. My kids loved to hear the miracle stories that Don shares throughout the book. Don paints a beautiful picture of heaven that made all of us so excited to be there some day but also reminds us of how much we have to learn here on earth before we go.
I really enjoyed this book. I think I may read it again. Its really great if you have lost someone very dear to you.
