This was the first book of the American Girls Collection that I read to preview for my daughter who was 12 at the time. I liked it so well that I gave it to her to read, and she ended up reading the entire collection, plus the other books related to this series. The artwork really impressed me.

Josefina Montoya is growing up on her family's ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1824. ever since Mama died a year before, Josefina and her sisters have been struggling to carry on without her. One bright autumn day, happy news arrives--their beloved grandfather is returning home after a long trading trip. Josefina know that he will bring exciting stories and wonderful treasures from his journey, just as he always does. But this time he brings something more--a great surprise that Josefina and her sisters never even dreamed of!

These books are wonderful! They show history and growing up in the times that each girl is set in. My daughters have their favorite and loved each of them.
