This was the best book I had ever read when I was younger

Kaya is a Nez Perce girl growing up in 1764. Kaya loves her horse Steps High but her boasting gets her into mischief. She learns that one's choices can have lasting consequences that don't always make you feel good inside. An enjoyable tale of life in a nomadic family group. An excellent story about Kaya and her family.
...although Kaya finds the twin brothers unharmed, she still must face a punishment. All her friends must, too, since one person's mistakes earn her a terrible nickname-will she ever be able to lose it?
