White Rock School students in Oklahoma are just waiting for new books to read!

White Rock School is a small PreK through 8th grade school located in Lincoln County,  Oklahoma.  We are an extremely rural school surrounded by pastures and farms.  We also have a high free/reduced lunch count at 76%.  We could be classified as a typical small country school.

Although the size and location offer many advantages, these factors can also create many disadvantages.  Unfortunately, being so small we often suffer greater effects from state budget cuts.  This is the case for our school.  Having less money coming in from than larger districts, cuts tend to affect us deeper by having less personnel to shuffle and less access to quality teaching materials.

With less money coming into the district, we need to tighten our belt and analyze how funds are spent.  This measure has left a gap in the variety of appropriate reading materials for the district.  Your help in and cooperation in correcting this matter would be greatly appreciated.  By contributing we would be able to offer a wider variety of reading material to all grades and provide a greater interest in reading for all.

Thank You for selecting us for this terrific program!

Phil Caffey,  Superintendent

Dear PaperbackSwap,

I have worked as the Library Media Specialist at White Rock Public School for two years. The library is very small with a lot of outdated material. We have books in our collection from the 1960’s! The first year I was at the school we were able to update the Accelerated Reading Program but then we did not have funding to purchase new books last year.

We are a rural school where many of our students do not have access to any other library. The importance of having books, that the students want to read, is vital to their education. By providing good reading material the students will be able to develop the joy of reading. This will help the students develop into lifelong readers and learners. So with PaperbackSwap's generation donation we could provide new updated books for our students and set them on the path to lifelong learning.

Cool, Everyone should have access to books. Kids need it. If you don't mind older books, come to OKC/Edmond and talk to the Archive's Book Folks in Edmond Second street, Wayne (the owner) is a very cool and compasionate fellow. Also Half Price Books does nice stuff for underrepresented locations.
