Graeme Stewart ElmentaryWe hit our Book Credits goal!
Stewart Elementary students in Chicago are looking forward to new books for
Family Reading Night!
The children of Graeme Stewart Elementary have visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads. How do these visions get in their heads: reading, reading reading ! And of course, Christmas is near. We are grateful for your generosity during these difficult times. 1000 books for our student body is an amazing gift.
Our children are children of the Uptown Community. The Stewart student body is about 57% African-American, 37% Hispanic, and 6% other. At least 98% of our children are below the poverty level and about 30% of our students transition in-and-out of homeless shelters. Given these demographics you can begin to understand the enormous excitement that your act of generosity will engender. I want to reiterate how grateful we are to you and the fact that you have chosen Stewart Elementary students!
Our students will use these books to read early in the morning when they arrive nearly an hour before school begins. Perhaps we will begin a morning and/or after school book club. With certainty, we will use the books during Family Reading Night. Our students may not have the means to go places in the physical world, but they have the ability to transport themselves to wonderful worlds through reading. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Juliet Rempa, Principal
I am the Assistant Principal at Graeme Stewart School. I would just like to tell you how grateful I am that you considered Stewart School for the PaperBackSwap book donation program!
We plan on using the books a few different ways. Depending on the grade level of the books we receive, we would like to use them during our Family Reading Night. We give every child that participates in this event a book to take home. Students really look forward to getting a new book after a wonderful night of enjoying books with their families, friends, and teachers.
I also teach a small 7th and 8th grade reading class. We read novels and have rich discussions about the novels we read. I would like to provide a few new titles for my groups to read this year. They have a wide variety of interests. Based on their interests I would like to share new novels with my students.
Finally, we would like to provide teachers with new books for their classroom libraries. These books will become a permanent part of the classroom library and will be enjoyed by students for many years.
Again, thank you for this generous donation to our school. Our students, staff, and parents will be forever grateful for this wonderful gift.
