West Lowndes Elementary School is a Title I school that is located in the rural area of Columbus, Mississippi.  It serves 295 students ranging from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade (PK-6).  Most of our students are from the nearby rural communities and over 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch.  Our mission at West Lowndes Elementary School is to “challenge all students to attain their greatest potential”.  Reading is a very important component of meeting our mission.

Many older adults have fond childhood memories of weekly trips to the local library or simply reading and enjoying their favorite book. Having a favorite book to read, made reading fun, and no one had to force them to do it.  Unfortunately, many of our students have not had this experience.  With a focus on technology, videos, and games in the world today, some students have not yet discovered the joys and excitement of a favorite book or author.  In addition, our small school library has a very limited amount of books.  Programs, such as this, would go a long way with keeping our students motivated and nurturing their love for reading.  This is because it would give them more exposure to books on a variety of topics and increase the school’s resources by allowing students to have more literature choices.

Our students will be excited to be recipients of new books.  After browsing the books, they might just find a new author or series that they can enjoy or that will become their favorite.  When that happens, reading will become fun and students will look forward to doing it again and again at every opportunity.

We would be honored and grateful if we are awarded books from your program.  The added resources and increased morale will enable us to continue to “challenge all students to attain their greatest potential.”

Thank you so much for this opportunity!
