Hello from Highlander Charter School in Providence, Rhode Island!

Highlander is an urban charter school with 285 students in grades K-8 located in the heart of Providence. Rhode Island.   Our school is a place that inspires and addresses the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social aspects of all its students. Our school was founded on the principle that strong teacher/student relationships, a balanced curriculum and a supportive environment, are central to educational achievement, particularly for economically disadvantaged students.

Approximately 75% of the students are low income. This year, High FIVE, the school’s parent organization, is challenging the students to read one million minutes beginning in October and ending in reading week in April. We want to show the students that reading can be fun and rewarding! We are offering incentive prizes along the way, as the students reach their milestones. We have one fundraiser a year and it pays for family events throughout the year.

We would love to be able to give our hard working readers new books to cherish for years to come! Thank you for considering Highlander Charter School as part of your donation program. Your generosity will be felt for years to come as the children grow a stronger passion for reading.

I am offering these books in memory of Buelle Smith McKenna, a teacher, my grandmother, my best friend. She taught me how wonderful it was to read. Reading takes you to places you may otherwise never go. Too bad I didn't learn that until I was an adult. God Bless you all. Janice

I chose Highlander Charter because it is about a mile away from where I went to elementary school. Now Gilbert Stewart is a middle school, but I thought it would be nice to support Highlander. Keep up the good work!
