Mt. Hermon Elementary School - Washington Parish, LAWe hit our Book Credits goal!
Mt. Hermon School in Washington Parish, LA is ready to put the fun back into reading!
We are a rural school with an extremely small tax base, so funding for books is just not there. The little amount of money we do get is spread over the pre K-12 school, and it doesn't even cover our text book costs so buying "extra" books isn't a possibility. We have 76% of our students eligible for free or reduced lunch.
At MHS, we strongly believe that our current education system has been sucking the fun out of reading over the past ten years. Kids think it is a chore - something they have to do. They don't understand it can be so much fun! - just as much fun as watching a good movie. Last year, we began a campaign to put the fun back in reading. We surveyed our students to find out what they are interested in. Since then, we've been trying to purchase books on those topics. We are providing time for teachers to read high interest books aloud to their students every day as well as giving students time to read a book of choice themselves. They choose a book and keep it as long as they need to.
They're allowed to take a book home, on trips, to lunch, anywhere...as long as they are reading. If the kids start a book and decide they don't want to finish it, that's ok too. As adults, we abandon books all the time. We are trying to turn our kids into life long readers. If we can do that, we've got it made. After all, wide reading is how you get smart! That is why we are desperately trying to get books by any means possible.
Thank you, PaperBackSwap members for your donations!

Update ***March 2012*** Update
I'm so sorry this has taken me so long. Here is a picture of some of our students with their PaperBackSwap books. We are SO excited! I sorted the books by readability and distributed them to my teachers in Prek - 5th grades. The books are already in classroom libraries, and the kids are enjoying them very much. We are so grateful!! I don't think your members understand how much this means to us. Our funds are so limited and continue to be cut. It's programs like yours that help us do what's right for our kids. Thank you!!

Dear PaperBackSwap members,
Thank you for donating books to Mt. Hermon School! We can't believe how quickly you've helped us meet our goal, and we can't wait to receive the books! By donating books, you are helping us put the fun back into reading at MHS!
You are all avid readers and know the joy and contentment that can be found with a good read. Our children now have a better chance of experiencing it for themselves. We are honored to be a part of the PaperBackSwap donation program, and words can't express how thankful we are.
