Let's help Mariam Boyd Elementary School

meet its Book Drive goal!

My name is Domonique Garland and I am currently a student teacher at Mariam Boyd Elementary School. The School is located in the county seat of rural Warren County, Warrenton, North Carolina.  Warren County is located in the northeastern corner of the Piedmont region approximately sixty miles northeast of Raleigh and Durham and bordering Virginia.  Mariam Boyd Serves an attendance area in the central part of the county and educates approximately thirty percent of the county’s pre-kindergarten through fifth grade public school children.  Our school is a Title One school with a free and reduced lunch rate that exceeds the ninetieth percentile. Our students are bused to our school from rural areas, the municipality of Warrenton housing projects and mobile housing units. 

During the duration of my student teaching, I would like to host an event that will support the children in the community. Many of Mariam Boyd School's families derive their income from industrial employment and manufacturing, especially since industry is slowly expanding in Warren County and neighboring counties. A significant number of our parents work in state and local employment, such as prisons and other government positions, small owner-operated businesses, service employment and retail trade. All teachers visited the homes of each student prior to the start of school and one thing we realized is that many students do not have books within the home.

My mission is to have a book drive so that I am able to provide every student within this school at least one book. There are currently 380 students enrolled in Mariam Boyd Elementary School who would love to have a book that they can have ownership of and read on their leisure.  With your donations, we can make this happen!

We are so very honored to be considered as a participant for the Paper Back Swap book donation program.  We are pleased to be able to present our students with personal copies of their favorite stories. We are looking forward to sharing the joy of reading within our school community.  We would like to provide teachers with new books to enhance their classroom libraries. These books will become a permanent part of the classroom library and will be enjoyed by students for years to come.  Thank you for your consideration and generosity.

Each One, Read One

Thanks to the generous donation of books from PaperBackSwap. each student at Mariam Boyd Elementary School will receive a book to call their own.  Many of our students come from very disadvantaged backgrounds and do not have the resources to buy books.  The book donation from PaperBackSwap will help our students read more, and knowing that they can keep the book will be an exciting experience for many of them.

This gift will hopefully strengthen our students' ability to read and encourage reading for enjoyment. A supplementary gift of books to classroom libraries will be greatly appreciated as well.  Many teachers use personal funds to increase the number of books in their classrooms.  Funds that would have otherwise been used for books will not be utilized for other needed classroom material.
