I recently bought a box of books that had 8 Georgette Heyer novels in it.  The books are all older versions.  Some may be the intial printing.  She is reportedly the Queen of regency romance.  What do you guys think of her and/or any of these books?  I have not read any of these.  The books definitely show age.  Two are probably postable but I think I would be disappointed so I do not plan to post.  I will add them to my every growing list of unpostables.    I have heard of Cotillion and Venetia and may read those.

You have three of my very favs there - Cotillion, Faro's Daughter and Friday's Child.

Heyer is always popular here, these will probably get snapped up as unpostables. But I would read them first!

I'm embarrassed to say I've never read her :-( but at least I've heard the name!! What exactly is 'regency'..i sthat the era that amanda quick writes like 'slightly shady' for instance? I enjoyed those but wasn't sure what era it was called...

I have several myself that I haven't read yet.  Just collected them here & there because I knew what they were.  The reason I haven't read any of them yet - the G ratings:P

Are they really G rated?  No sex scenes at all?  One of these days, I am going to try her out  regardless, but  this info is a downer for me...  I like some steam in my romance~

If there are any of her books with more than kissing in there, I don't know what they are, so yeah, as far as I know, all G rated.  I'm no expert on her books though.  There might be something out there and I just haven't seen or heard of it.  I doubt it, but ya never know:P

No, no sex at all. We have endless discussion on the Heyer list about whether books with marriages in them are consummated or not, in fact. :-)  But her books are very funny, have wonderful characterizations and she basically invented the genre.  I actually hated all Regencies with sex in them for years (decades!) because they just seemed to wrong.

I love Georgette Heyer- and I'm an avowed reader of erotica, as some of you may know. She is absolutely the best Regency writer out there. My favorites of the ones you have listed are Venetia and Faro's Daughter. But you have to read Frederica, The Convenient Marriage, These Old Shades and Devil's Cub to really get a good taste of her.

Yes, there are no sex scenes and nothing more than a kiss

The fact that Heyer can show the romance without the sex shows how good of a writer she was. Venetia is a little more...I don't want to say less G-rated as there is still no sex scenes, but more sexual innuendo between the hero and heroine than her other books.

For instance, the hero grabs the heroine and kisses her, and his first thought on seeing the heroine is "Hmm, I should seduce her", they engage in slight banter in which the hero and heroine discuss um, illegitimate children and the hero makes a remark about how he may have some running around but he's not sure. It's my favorite Heyer book, the hero and heroine interactions are great.

The G rating has been what's keeping me from reading them as well, but I keep  hoping that the humor will outweigh the no sex. I did agree to review Friday's Child and False Colors when SourceBooks rereleased them, but I only got 30 pages into False Colors before I had to put it down. For me, the mother was TSTL and I couldn't stand reading anymore about her, so even though I like the premise of the story I'll never know how it plays out!!

Thanks for all the feedback on Georgette Heyer's work.  I dont mind G rating at all.  Don't get me wrong I like a story with passion but I can be just as enteretained by a good plot and witty dialogue.  So I will give them a try before listing in my unpostables.  I am going on vacation and can take a couple with me since the flying cirucs act that occurs in lugguage on airplanes wont make them any more unpostable.  : +)

Weren't many of her books written in the 50's?  That could explain the no-sex thing.  I haven't read one either but I picked up a couple at the thrift store for .50 each recently to try.  Many of her titles are OOP/HTF and WL here.  Although they've been releasing some recently.

Yeah she predates the bodice ripper.  She's been dead since 1974.  So I wouldn't expect sex in any of her books.

I honestly can't imagine Heyer putting sex in her books, no matter when she was writing. Just not her style.

Sometimes I prefer no sex so I can let my imagination wander. 

I've read about half a dozen Heyer books - I'm drawn only to romances that are true to the mores of the Regency. My favorites were Venetia and Arabella. Black Sheep was also pretty good. Frederika was a bore, and I couldn't stand the heroine in Sprig Muslin. I haven't read Faro's Daughter or Friday's Child but have them both on my to read shelves.......
