The famous cellist Jaqueline du Pre died in 1987 at age 42, of multiple sclerosis. She was married to the even more famous pianist Daniel Barenboim. Around the first two-thirds of the book deals with her youth and development as a musician and concert artist; the remainder, with her life after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a terrible fate for someone to whom playing an instrument was everything. Amazingly, she still managed to be a very effective cello teacher.
