The crystal blue tide of the Pacific pounded the shore line's white sand as seagulls scavenged for deposited fish and crustaceans. The smell of sea salt permeated the air.

April and Mitch, who wanted to spend their weekend away from campus, walked from the car toward the open water. Mitch stopped and lifted April into his arms to carry her but pretended to be hurt.

"Can't...go any further," Mitch strained himself to say. "Must...stop."

April burst into laughter, "you asshole, I haven't gained that much weight."

Mitch laid April down on the sand and gazed into her hazel-green eyes. They've known each other since freshman year at UCLA when, at a fraternity party, April spilled her drink all over Mitch's lap; whether by accident or not has been an ongoing debate between them.

Mitch cradled April's head and kissed her crimson colored lips. He then unfastened her bikini top and groped her breast. April directed his mouth down onto her neck in complete submission.

Over his shoulder, she saw the figure of a man who limped down the beach.

"Baby, there's a guy over there. He can see us."

"Let him watch," Mitch said. "We'll give him a show he'll never forget."

He proceeded to kiss April's neck as she became worried of being leered at. Unbeknownst to her, the figure approached closer to the distracted couple. The mid-day sun that shined in April's eyes became obscured.

She saw that the man's unbuttoned red and yellow Hawaiian shirt, which exposed his deeply lacerated stomach. Bile filled intestines hung from his midsection, and his left eyeball drooped from it's engorged socket.

April screamed in disbelief as the corpse-like fiend grabbed Mitch's head from behind. He forced his jagged yellow teeth into Mitch's scalp and tore a strip of cranial flesh. The ghoulish assaulter devoured it like spaghetti.

Still topless, April crawled from underneath her boyfriend's ravaged body. She noticed the public restrooms on the embankment behind her. As she ran toward the lime-green building, Mitch's skull began to cave under the immense force of the attacker's blood-thirsty jaws.

Once inside, April barricaded the ladies room door with an aluminum trash can. She then hid in the private stall furthest from the doorway. The dim glow of the fluorescent lights above exasperated the nausea she felt over the sight of her true love eaten alive.

A violent thud came from outside. April, terrified of what stood beyond the door, searched for a weapon and found a plunger that sat next to the toilet. A second thud dislodged the trash can from under the door handle.

The maggot-riddled intruder plodded into the restroom. April could hear the gargled moans as he dragged himself toward her stall. The foul stench of rotted flesh made her want to gag. If she wanted to survive, she must retaliate.

April kicked open the stall door which knocked the decomposed cannibal down onto the urine covered tile floor. She took the plunger, handle first, and rammed it into the worm hole-like eye socket. A forceful push fully impaled his skull with the plunger. With the once human creature down on the floor, April ran out the restroom.

She remembered the car keys in Mitch's pocket, so April ran back down to the beach in delirious panic. She hesitated to run any further toward her dead boyfriend once she saw what the creature done to him: the top of his dismembered skull exposed portions of his partially consumed brain. A stray seagull began to pick at bits of his frontal lobe.

Unaware of what else to do, April reached into Mitch's blood-stained pocket and pulled out his car keys. She began to run back up the embankment, when Mitch raised up and grabbed her by the ankle. As if by instinct, he attempted to bite into her left foot, but April managed to slip from his ice cold grasp. Tears ran down her face when she saw what had become of her lover, now partially decapitated and flesh hungry.

April reached the car and noticed her bare chest in the reflection from the driver's side window. She would have to escape this way. After she got in and started the engine, she saw the brain dead creature with the toilet plunger still lodged through it's face stumble onto the parking lot.

She put the car in drive, stomped the accelerator, and with a wild scream, aimed straight for plunger face. It's head smacked the windshield like a month old melon. She swerved the car right, which threw the mangled mess off the hood, and drove out the parking lot exit.

The sky became overcast as April merged onto the freeway. What chance she had of returning home fell apart when the mile long pile up of cars ahead forced April to a dead stop. Weary commuters walked through the grass-covered center median back toward the city.

April, still unaware of what was going on, turned on the car radio:

*reports tonight from the Pentagon indicate that the satellite OMNI 3, which re-entered Earth's orbit forty-eight hours ago, did in fact carry around it some sort of terrestrial radiation. The satellite, returning from a year-long orbit around the planet Venus, lost tracking capabilities and crashed just northeast of Los Angeles sometime around 2:45am Thursday morning. The White House has yet to confirm if the satellite's contents have anything to do with the recent outbreak of mass cannibalism or the re-animation of the recently deceased. We urge all listeners to remain in their homes until further-

"Zombies," April said in bewilderment as she switched off the radio. She reached into back seat for one of Mitch's old t-shirts. She always told him how much she hated that "rag" as she called it. April sobbed as the scent of her boyfriend overwhelmed her.

It would be dark in a few hours. If she was going to get back to campus and call her parents, she would have to join the other commuters and walk.

She stepped out of the car and slammed the door behind her. The noise caused a few of the people ahead to turn around. April saw their yellowed skin and blank faces. One of them opened their mouth; it's teeth smeared with blood. She realized then the mistake she made as the whole mass of zombies turned and began to run toward their next meal.

April, in an act of desperation, got back into the car and locked all four doors. The hungry horde converged onto her only sanctuary. A single zombie in a leather jacket and pajama pants threw a cinder block through the windshield. Her sanctuary had been breached.

When she got back in the car she should've drove in the other direction. Good story, though. Look forward to more from you.

Can't go wrong with zombies. Thanks for making my day. I esp. liked how the infection was spread via alien contamination.
