Mine periodically land in the Atlantic, but the "No Water-Damage" fairies must meet the truck at the beach, as they always arrive nice and dry!  I think the map is just to amuse us - some part of the program puts in the milage and it doesn't matter if it's over water, volcano, or Hogwarts!

I would think most books going to Alaska would pass through Washington state? I am not sure why that would be the wrong direction (although Hawaii would!)

I think it's a glitch on the map - I had one mailed from Alaska, but it shows as mailed from Hawaii on the map. (it's a completed transaction)

The same thing happened to me. I requested a book from 141 miles away (NH to ME) but it went to MA first!   LOL   :)
