I have to say I love this book and the movie as well. It is one of my favorite books about romance, magic, the unexpected, etc. It has everything in it from wolves, evil stepmothers, trolls, goblins, magic, etc. It is definitely a book I would recommend to others. I wish there had been a sequel to continue the story.

The made for television movie was based off this book. Fairytales for grown-ups, I would call it. Very good!
Unfortunately, this book was probably the silliest book I've ever read. I rented the movie after I read the book hoping for some improvement, but I couldn't even finish watching it. I realize this book was a basic retelling of the movie, but it just seemed to get sillier and sillier as I ventured deeper into the book. The characters were weird and I couldn't identify with any of them. The premise has a lot of promise -- too bad it was never fulfilled.
One good thing: I liked the way they worked the "old" fairy tales into this story. That was the only neat thing about the whole wretched affair.

A fun adventure that I read many times!
I read this book after I had seen the mini series, and I'd like to say that it follows the movie excellently.

I really enjoyed the TV mini-series of this book and also again enjoyed reading it! It is a modern day fairy tale and worth the time.

Includes a few scenes not in the TV movie, but otherwise a rather standard novelization.
I rented this movie from a store because it looked like somthing I would like and boy was I wrong, cause I loved it! my mom came home one day and gave this book to me. I feel kind of selfish, because I don't want to give it up especially if someone is wishing for it. Maybe I'll read it again and see if I feel ready to seperate myself from it. I know I'm ridiculous.
Good book, but I loved the mini-series and the book was different...not sure why since the book was written after the mini-series and the changes didn't seem to add anything to the story.

The 10th Kingdom is book that is tied to a tv movie that aired in the USA in 2000, under the same name. It is retelling of some fairy tales and what happens after ever after. Probably one of stories that started landslide of retelling of fairy tale movies and books.
I had seen the movie that this book is based on. I love it. I thought the book was going add on to the story or continuation of it. It did not, it is basically a rewrite of the movie but done really well. Since it has been 17 years (Wow!) since the movie aired I pretty much forgot a lot of the movie, so it was like a new story. Still enjoyed it. I also loved that there were pictures of characters in the movie which made it easier to picture the actor as the characters. Love the characters Virginia and Wolf. At first I did not like them as a couple but they grow on you.
I still feel there should be more after the story and wish it was a series. I liked the stories behind the 10th Kingdoms but I do not think we will get more. It's not the best retelling of fairy tale but it is fun and worthwhile to read or watch if you rather.
I really wish NBC would do more movies like this that they did in the early 2000's. They were bright, colorful and fanciful. Just my kind of fantasy telling.

This story gently pokes fun at many fantasy/quest type tales. It seems a bit drawn-out in places, but then again, thats how the show was.
The Wolf/Virginia pairing was simultaneously cute and creepy. Yes, the whole wolves-mate-for-life thing is romantic, but how many people has Wolf killed? Prior to meeting Virginia and reforming himself for her which is unrealistic and plays to female desire to save the bad boys Wolf had very strong instincts, and probably killed/ate people.
The singing ring was a lot less stupid/annoying than I remember it being in the show; could be because I didnt actually have to hear it singing. Regardless, that was a plus.
Overall its a pretty light/cute book that gives you some warm fuzzies and a happy ending, which is what I needed after reading a couple of heavier books (looking at you, George Martin).

This book runs very parallel to everything that happens in the movie, which I've watch at least a couple of dozen times (marathon the DVD while playing on the computer or something. :D). I think without having seen the movie, a lot of the dialogue would be really boring because the inflections just aren't well described at all. Luckily, I could hear the dialogue from the movie in my head as I read this one, which is what made the book better to me. If someone were to read it alone without the movie, it may seem a little boring or overly cheezy. I did like that they had some extra personal thoughts for the characters, which I'll keep in mind the next time I watch the movie, because it helps to give them more depth. There were also some differences, like where Acorn takes Clay Face's place in the swamp, but it works well either way. This book is a definite read if you loved the movie and just want to re-experience it in a different way.
