As a norm in my reading, I tend to lean towards the mystery and suspense genre. But every now and then, as a relief from the busy hectic schedule of life, I like to enjoy a novel with a bit of comedy. And one of my favorite authors to turn to at that point is Jen Turano. Her books are a hoot and they totally give me a laugh when I most need it. After a Fashion is the start to a new series called A Class of their Own, and is set around three young women who are part of the working class. Book one sets a good pace and I think the rest of the trilogy will follow suit.

Harriet Peabody is the heroine in this funny little story who wants to someday open a fashion store for working women such as herself. She designs beautiful gowns that have been remade from donations and wants to own a business where she is in charge. But for now she is employed at a millinery and is sent on an errand to deliver some hats to a fashionable and hard to deal with young woman. Though when she arrives some trouble ensues and Harriet ends up losing her job. But, some good does come out of it as she meets this totally snobby and filthy rich bachelor, Oliver Addleshaw. Only problem is, he wants her to pose as his fiance for an upcoming party and they two of them can't stand each other!! This is the start to a wonderful story filled with humor and comedy that will make your heart dance with joy.

I do have to admit, one of my favorite characters in the whole book would have to be Buford, the big dog owned by Oliver. He has some parts that seriously make you laugh out loud! This is written in the Victorian era so women owning businesses was pretty unheard of and while Harriet has a mind of her own and some pretty outlandish ideas, I wanted to slap her a time or two myself, Oliver takes to them with a big heart. When he meets two women of the night who are friends of Harriet's it is quite funny:) You will not be disappointed as Mrs Turano takes you on a fun ride through New York. Loved it!!

After a Fashion by Jen Turano
A Class of Their Own Series Book One
Harriet Peabody is a positive and easy going type of gal. Orphaned at a young age, she had to depend on her only relative to take care of her, Aunt Jane. Her aunt wasn't a kind or honest woman at all. Thankfully she would leave Harriet with different people and she learned life lessons from society manners to circus tricks. Minding her own business working for a hat maker, one simple hat delivery turns poor Harriet's world upside down.

Oliver Addleshaw is one of the most sought after bachelors. He was handsome and rich. And he wanted to be richer. When a simple invite to a society lady turns bad, he is desperate to find another woman to be at his side for an important business deal. Who better to fill in than the interesting hat lady? This high class gentleman is about to learn a thing or two about real life.

I enjoy reading books by this author as she always adds a touch of humor. In this book it was through the antics of a big dog named Buford. Poor Buford, if he wasn't ripping clothes off people, he was shaking in fear of heights or some other shadow that scared him. I'm looking forward to the books for her friends Millie and Lucetta. Millie's book is next...In Good Company.
