This is a wonderful cookbook, filled with so many variations of favorites, and it is a joy to read.
240 recipes and each one begins with a story of origin of recipe or a few comments by author...

For example:
"Good friends, good food, good wine, and good weather - doth a good picnic make."

or... HEAVENLY BEEF PIE WITH DEVILISHLY RICH MASHED POTATO TOPPING says "The following dish is of mixed heritage. Not shepherd's pie, but a combination of two freely adapted Alice B. Toklas recipes that make an entirely new French connection.

or SARATOGA "SURPRISE" LOAF says "this recipe is a verison of a meat loaf I tasted many years ago at a diner on the road to Saratoga Springs in New York. The loaf, striped with green and red peppers, had a secret ingredient according to the chef. You guessed it - oatmeal.
