Duke Ellington was referred to as a 'musical anthropologist' by people interviewed for this book. With Ellington's suave personality and debonair performances, it was a shock to hear just how little formal education in music he had under his belt. This book reminds readers that Ellington had an incredible ability to hear music and recall it at will later. I remember watching him perform in movies and being in awe of his musical prowess.

I thought this book helped the reader to understand how Duke's upbringing formed him and influenced his debonair sophistication that was the hallmark of his performing style. I had no idea that he was a native of Washington, D C. He also pursued high school at a school specializing in graphic arts. The book also tells about Ellington's difficult relationships with women. Overall, I found a tremendous amount of information here about a man I'd admired for many years.

The book referred to Ellington as "a great synthesizer of modern music and historical African American rhythms." What a great way to sum up a life. While writing this review, I tuned in to various online films featuring Duke Ellington and his band. I thought it was a great way to enjoy a rainy afternoon.
