What books are we reading in August?

I am reading Instrument of Slaughter by Edward Marston. Very good WWI mystery. If you enjoy historical mysterys he has several series and I enjoy all of them.

I must be subconsciously trying to shorten Mt. TBR, the past few books I have read are ones that have been on the bookshelf for a while.  The trend continues with my next read, An Infamous Army by Georgette Heyer.

I'm about halfway through Murder in Bloomsbury (Atlas Catesby) by D.M. Quincy.  This is the second in this historical series. Nicely written.

Just have to share a bit about a wonderful book I have completed.  It's titled A HIgher Call by Adam Makos and is about two pilots who fought in WWII.  One is American and one is German.  Their brief encounter during the war is an incredible tale of valor and honor.  The American's plane was so badly damaged by German fighter planes that the German pilot could not believe that it was still in the air.  His compassion and admiration for the American pilot led him to spare the American plane and its crew.  He even escorted them part of the way home.  These two men would seek each other out many years later to share their side of that encounter and become good friends.  And, although both died in 2008 their story is told in this wonderful book.  Such an outstanding story.

Clearing of more books off the bookshelf- now reading A Burnable Book by Bruce Holsinger, kind of odd but good so far.

Alice --- I too have read some of the Marston books.  Right now I think I have some of his "Railroad" mysteries and another one that I cannot bring to mind.  I will look into these Homefront Detective ones, they sound interesting.

I finished A Burnable Book...meh, but then I read something really terrific.  To Die But Once by Jacqueline Winspear is the latest in the Maisie Dobbs series.  It was wonderfully written, perhaps even one of my favorites except for the first novel.  I shed a couple of tears towards the end of this story and I really enjoyed the author's remarks.  4 1/2 out of 5 stars on this one, my main critique was that I wish it had been longer!  Now I've begun kind of quirky sci-fi, h/f novel, Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.

REK - I read A Higher Call some time ago and really enjoyed it!

Just finished Why Kill the Innocent by C S Harris - another good addition to the Sebastian St. Cyr series. Hero has a pretty large part in this story and I just love her character!

I'm currently reading a new author/series for me: A Propsal to Die For ( Lady Almene Callender Mystery).  This is a historical cozy mystery set in the 1920s. I think right now it's only on Kindle. Enjoying it so far.

Cheryl, Connie Willis is wonderful, and "Doomsday Book" is perhaps my all-time favorite book.  If you like it, she has written three more books featuring the same professor and time travel to different periods in English history.

Wow, I had no idea Vicky.  This was such an unexpected surprise of a book and I really liked it very much.  It was one that had been sitting on the book shelf for quite some time.  I will have to check the others out.  I've been reading The Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki, another unexpected pleasure by an author unknown to me.
