The Auschwitz Goalkeeper: A Prisoner of War's True Story
The Auschwitz Goalkeeper A Prisoner of War's True Story Author:Ron Jones, Joe Lovejoy The Auschwitz Goalkeeper is a prisoner of war's true story. It has none of the inflated and sanitised boys'-own heroism usually associated with prisoner-of-war books and films. Instead, as Ron Jones insists in his preface: It is my intention to tell it straight, exactly as it was. The fact that British POWs ended up in Auschwitz needs no embro... more »idery and receives none here, although my own story is more extraordinary than some. It is the extraordinary story of a man who has chosen to speak out after 70 years; the story of a man who was, owing to a clerical error, called up to the Army from a reserved occupation, and who was captured by the Germans in North Africa. The horrors he would then endure in the most notorious death camp of them all were shocking enough, but worse still was the brutal march across Europe, from Poland to the Austrian border, as the SS retreated before the advancing Russians. The prisoners on the trek were not fed by the Germans for three months, and had to scavenge for food, like animals. "It was a truly terrible time, and I witnessed things I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to see."« less
