This is the first of The Avengers I've read, and I'll likely seek out more. A quick read and even though the plot is familiar, I thoroughly enjoyed the author's approach to revealing the problem. This would book make a great movie (though again, the theme is a bit redundant) because of the nature of approach - you don't really have an idea of what is going on or who to suspect until you are already drawn into the story line. I enjoyed being completely clueless as to the 'evil mastermind' until the revelation, and was taken by surprise.

Set in what I'm guessing to be the late 1960s or early 1970s, the author inserts quite a few obvious hilarities. This includes, upon description of a huge wall-sized mainframe computer, the 'outlandish' and 'crazy' claim that in 20-50 years there will be computers small enough to fit... on the corner of a desk!

From the back of the book:
The Avengers are back! British super spies John Steed and Emma Peel return in a brand-new adventure that pits them against the bizarre and sinister machinations of a criminal genius.
A murderous double agent is afoot in London, and th evidence points to John Steed. To clear his name and catch the killer, the dapper Steed must reunite with his former partner, the brilliant and formidable Emma Peel.
The twisting trail leads them to old allies and adversaries, a berserk gorilla, and a graveyard full of homicidal angels. In short, the Avengers are on the case again - and anything less than justice simply wouldn't be sporting.
