Eh, it's all right, but it's taking me a lot longer to finish than normal for a LUNA book. The problem isn't so much the focus on the Council but rather that there IS no focus. The plot feels very disjointed, what there is of one.

I was disappointed in this one. It wasn't as good as the first one. Mainly goes on and on about the Council politics. Rather boring.

I agree with other reviewers who felt this one had a disjointed plot...it dragged.

The first book in the series, Staying Dead (followed Curse the Dark #2, Bring It On book #3, and Burning Bridges #4), was pretty good, but since then...the only new things to happen since the first book's introduction to the novel idea of current users and to the fatae/human distrust were the developing romance with Sergei and the introduction of The Silence, Sergei's former "Skulls"-like masters of the universe group.

Now, having read all the books, including the last book (Burning Bridges) I feel like I was strung along to an obvious conclusion. The development was slow and could have been done in one really good fast-paced book instead of dragged through three less-than-mediocre sequels.

I've decided to pretend that Staying Dead was a really good stand-alone novel, and that the rest never existed.

Each book gets better. It's easy to love Wren and Sergei and their assorted talent, human and fatae friends. The Council of Mages is still doing their best to drive a wedge between the disparate groups. Dirty tricks abound, but there is no proof.
It's still not clear if the Silence intends good or ill. Wren and Sergei are adamant about not working for that organization

I've enjoyed all of Laura Anne Gilman's books and wish she'd hurry up and write some more. If you're a new to this author start with the 1st in the series otherwise you'll won't get the jist of the story line.
